The total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/484536\/cyclone-gabrielle-who-are-the-11-victims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death toll in that storm was 11.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rainfall<\/p>\n<p>A number of places across the North Island saw their wettest day on record last week.<\/p>\n<p>MetService said Tauranga, Whitianga, and Whakat\u0101ne all saw their records broken on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUEVTD_220126flood001_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"453\" alt=\"Papamoa Hills flooding\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nFlooding near Papamoa Hills, Tauranga, in the area where a house was destroyed in a slip overnight.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ\/Alan Gibson\n<\/p>\n<p>Tauranga received 274mm of rain, making it the wettest day on record, while Whitianga saw 247.6mm, and 114.2mm for Whakat\u0101ne.<\/p>\n<p>From midnight on Wednesday to midday Thursday, Whitianga also saw a months&#8217; worth of rain, 353mm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUF1MY_Image_24_jfif.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"Flooding in Whitianga.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nFlooding in Whitianga last week.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ\/Charlotte Cook\n<\/p>\n<p>Other places that faced a months&#8217; rain in 36 hours Hicks Bay, Whakat\u0101ne, and Kerikeri, MetService said.<\/p>\n<p>Slips<\/p>\n<p>NZTA reported a number of slips across the roading network in storm hit regions.<\/p>\n<p>There are 40 slip and debris sites now confirmed in the Waioweka Gorge, with seven severe sites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUPJNV_Waioweka_slip_3_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"A slip on State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nA slip on State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied\/NZTA\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We estimate that in total a minimum of 1,000 more truck loads at of debris will need to be removed from the area.&#8221; said Rob Service, NZTA&#8217;s Controller for State Highway Two\/Waioweka Gorge Response and Recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Recovery work had also restarted at the Mount Maunganui slip on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Work was put on hold on Sunday due to the risk of further slips after a crack was spotted on the cliff face.<\/p>\n<p>Property Damage<\/p>\n<p>A number of buildings were badly hit during the wild weather.<\/p>\n<p>In the Coromandel, ten properties had been red stickered, meaning they were unsafe to return to.<\/p>\n<p>A further 16 had also been yellow stickered, while 16 others had been white stickered.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUEBY3_IMG_0256_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Tairua slip - Motuhoa Road on Mount Paku - a property is extensively damaged as a landslide comes down behind it - 22 January 2026\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nA property is extensively damaged as a landslide on Mount Paku&#8217;s Motuhoa Road comes down behind it.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ\/Calvin Samuel\n<\/p>\n<p>There been 115 properties damaged, however Thames Coromandel Civil Defence said that figure could change.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bay of Plenty, four red placards and 11 yellow placards had been issued.<\/p>\n<p>Tauranga City Council Controller Tom McEntyre said council conducted a number of rapid building assessments across the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The assessed locations are dispersed across Tauranga, including Welcome Bay, Gate P\u0101, Bethlehem, and \u014ct\u016bmoetai,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Several properties in the Whang\u0101rei District had also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/584997\/whangarei-mayor-wants-district-s-state-of-emergency-lifted-on-tuesday-if-practical\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red and yellow stickered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Work resumes at the Mount Maunganui landslide site on January 26.
