He is holding a canvas in a rainbow of colours that are painted in large pixel-like squares.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Paul Daly<\/p>\n<p>Paul Lemmon said he took his inspiration from glitches on TV and social media<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A show of oil paintings made to look like glitches similar to those on TV and social media will be held in Coventry in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The display features more than 40 paintings by Birmingham-born Paul Lemmon at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, which he said &#8220;interrogate&#8221; the relationships people have with the online world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The show begins with 10 works which Lemmon created using corrupted YouTube footage as his inspiration, containing images of people talking to the camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;My paintings look like screens but they don&#8217;t behave like screens. The power doesn&#8217;t run out, they don&#8217;t change or need software updates, have no notifications or logins, and can&#8217;t be downloaded or switched off,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">One definition of a glitch is a short-lived fault in a system operating otherwise as it should.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">As well as the paintings, there are abstract animations showcasing the corrupted videos that he created as part of the painting process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Lemmon said the effect also acted as a &#8220;metaphor for the masks we wear, and personas we assume for social media, as if splintering and fracturing our personality&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768389368_961_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/3c531bc0-f796-11f0-a422-4ba8a094a8fa.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Paul Lemmon An oil painting made up of colourful pixel-like squares. the colours are made up of blues, whites and turquoise greens.
