{"id":254143,"date":"2026-01-27T12:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T12:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/254143\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T12:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T12:38:09","slug":"life-saving-lifeline-wairoa-airport-runway-to-be-extended-and-upgraded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/254143\/","title":{"rendered":"Life-saving lifeline: Wairoa airport runway to be extended and upgraded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">The upgrade will be funded with a $3m grant from the Regional Infrastructure Fund and $1.2m from the North Island Weather Event Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Both funds are managed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment\u2019s K\u0101noa\u2013 Regional Economic Development &amp; Investment Unit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Wairoa District Council, which owns and operates the airport, will manage the project and fund future maintenance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">The runway will be extended from 914m to 1250m. Improvements will also be made to the airport\u2019s drainage, lighting and fencing to enable 24-hour operation, with upgrades to the airport\u2019s vertical guidance systems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">The New Zealand Air Ambulance Service transports more than 400 patients each year to and from the Wairoa community from its headquarters at Hawke\u2019s Bay Airport. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"New Zealand Air Ambulance Service (NZAAS) transports more than 400 patients a year to and from Wairoa from its headquarters at Hawke's Bay Airport.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>New Zealand Air Ambulance Service (NZAAS) transports more than 400 patients a year to and from Wairoa from its headquarters at Hawke&#8217;s Bay Airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Its chief executive, Annabel Toogood, said they were happy to see this investment confirmed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis service provides a fast, reliable and cost-effective pathway to care when time matters most,\u201d Toogood said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWith aircraft operating into and out of Wairoa on most days, the reliability of the runway and supporting infrastructure is essential to safe, consistent service delivery,\u201d Toogood said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the upgrade was a game-changer and would help save lives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe airport provides a critical health service daily and is vital during emergencies, particularly when the roading network into and out of the district is compromised,\u201d Little said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe upgrade will deliver a range of benefits, including strengthening the region\u2019s resilience to future emergencies and reducing transfer times for critical health services. This investment will help save lives.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">He thanked everyone who had worked hard to get the project elevated to a national level. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur council is particularly grateful to all the stakeholders, including local iwi and the airport users, who supported this project, which comes at no cost to our local ratepayers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Regional Development Minister Shane Jones said the airport was critical infrastructure for the area, supporting commercial air passenger services, health transport and logistics during extreme weather events. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen roads are cut off, the airport becomes an even more vital lifeline, as we saw during Cyclone Gabrielle when it handled more than 100 emergency flights in quick succession,\u201d Jones said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis upgrade will extend and improve the runway\u2019s operating capability, improving the area\u2019s resilience and increasing potential for economic growth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vwaNpWtPaxhXkxNi\" style=\"display:none\">Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.
