{"id":254878,"date":"2026-01-27T23:09:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T23:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/254878\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T23:09:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T23:09:07","slug":"wingham-wildlife-park-baby-capybaras-are-stealing-hearts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/254878\/","title":{"rendered":"Wingham Wildlife Park baby capybaras are &#8216;stealing hearts&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Three baby capybaras that are &#8220;stealing hearts&#8221; at a Kent wildlife park have been named Colin, Clive and Cuthbert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The cuddly creatures, born in October, were given their names after the public came up with options and then voted from a shortlist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A video of the trio was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DT-AtL3DBMx\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted on Instagram<\/a> as the names were announced by keepers, who said: &#8220;Forget heist movies, these cute &#8216;baby potatoes&#8217; are stealing our hearts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Meg Lawler, head of mammals at Wingham Wildlife Park, near Canterbury, said the names for the furry band of brothers were inspired by the well-known chocolate caterpillar cakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Capybaras &#8211; the world&#8217;s largest rodents &#8211; were <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-england-london-65177286\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an internet sensation back in 2023<\/a> when a TikTok song had hundreds of millions of views, and animal parks and zoos saw a rapid rise in demand to meet them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Last year, keepers caring for capybaras in Oxfordshire described them as &#8220;chilled&#8221; creatures that &#8220;<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/videos\/c4g70e1z834o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vibe through life<\/a>&#8220;, with their days starting in the afternoon and not worrying about a thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Back at the park in Kent, Lawler said the trio had received a great deal of attention from visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Even before the babies were born obviously, capybaras &#8211; everybody wanted to see them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Now we&#8217;ve got the babies, they&#8217;re getting lots and lots of attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said the park always kept fans involved, adding: &#8220;We got people to put some names in. We picked our favourites.
