This is considered a Black Moon under the definition of the second new moon within a single calendar month.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-what-is-a-black-moon\"\/>What is a Black Moon?<\/p>\n<p id=\"5110958e-5844-447d-b441-97c4557ffdbc\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">A Black Moon is not an official astronomical term but there are two common definitions for the term according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/astronomy\/moon\/black-moon.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/astronomy\/moon\/black-moon.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Time and Date<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The second new moon in a single calendar month.The third new moon in a season of four new moons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a26ebd9e-94e8-4b6b-8523-54314f7f630b\">While a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a> refers to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon phase<\/a> when the moon&#8217;s Earth-facing side is fully illuminated by sunlight, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new moon<\/a> refers to the moon phase when the moon&#8217;s Earth-facing side is fully in shadow. (Unfortunately, that means the Black Moon will be more or less invisible.)<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-why-is-a-black-moon-rare\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Why is a Black Moon rare? <a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"de81af92-c9a3-43a3-9fe5-b5658813f4cd-0\">A Black Moon is a fairly rare occurrence.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Because the lunar calendar almost lines up with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s calendar year, there is typically one full moon and one new moon each month. A second full moon in a single calendar month is sometimes called a &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15455-blue-moon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-moon-what-is-it-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon<\/a>.&#8221; By this definition, a Black Moon is the flip side of a Blue Moon: the second new moon in a single calendar month. These Black Moons occur approximately once every 29 months and are the most common type of Black Moon, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/astronomy\/moon\/black-moon.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/astronomy\/moon\/black-moon.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Time and Date<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the second definition, a Black Moon refers to an extra full moon in a season. Because Earth&#8217;s seasons are approximately three months long, they typically have three new moons. When a season has four new moons the third new moon is called a Black Moon. (Image credit: Karl Tate\/Space.com)<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"2e41ff6c-aed4-4a06-87f5-33ca55f2209e\">During its &#8220;new moon&#8221; phase, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> is always &#8220;black&#8221;. It happens at that time of the month when the moon passes through the same part of the sky as the sun and as such, the moon&#8217;s dark or unilluminated side faces Earth. So there really is nothing to see.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike a &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/supermoon-what-is-it-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/supermoon-what-is-it-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38940-supermoon-facts.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/supermoon-what-is-it-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supermoon<\/a>,&#8221; which gets countless numbers of people scurrying for vantage points to see a slightly larger and slightly brighter-than-average full moon, with a Black Moon, you simply can&#8217;t see it.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of evenings later, however, you&#8217;ll be able to pick out a slender sliver of a waxing crescent moon low in the western twilight sky about 30 or 40 minutes after sunset local time.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/night-sky-january-2026-what-to-see\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/night-sky-january-2026-what-to-see\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16149-night-sky.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/night-sky-january-2026-what-to-see\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Night sky: What you can see tonight [maps]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some people mistakenly refer to the appearance of any thin lunar crescent as the &#8220;new moon.&#8221; This fallacy has even spread into popular literature.
