KUALA LUMPUR: Positive economic data have reinforced the position and strength of the ringgit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n
He noted that the currency\u2019s appreciation also reflects confidence in Malaysia\u2019s economic system, in line with the nation\u2019s improving economic indicators.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe strengthening of the ringgit should not be viewed in isolation; it must also be considered alongside rising investment, incomes, and lower unemployment.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverall economic data point to a positive trend, which in turn bolsters the ringgit\u2019s position and resilience,\u201d he told the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time yesterday.<\/p>\n
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) on the factors behind the ringgit\u2019s gains against the US dollar and its impact on the country\u2019s exports and imports.<\/p>\n
He said the ringgit\u2019s strength has not hindered trade flows. The government will continue to strengthen the economy, manage key economic policies, curb the deficit, and attract investment.<\/p>\n
\u201cNormally, a stronger ringgit brings positive effects, although there are minor concerns because it relates to the export and import of goods.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut overall, no country wants its currency to weaken or fall below its intrinsic value,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
At 8 am yesterday, the ringgit was traded at 3.9650\/9750 against the US dollar, compared with 3.9615\/9670 at Monday\u2019s close.
