Designed for peer-to-peer transactions within a closed merchant ecosystem, it is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/qoin.com\/whitepaper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">whitepaper<\/a>, Qoin presents its project as being run by the Cayman Islands-based Qoin Foundation and does not mention BPS Financial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The document briefly cites a May 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/download.asic.gov.au\/media\/4myffyny\/24-090mr-asic-v-bps-financial-pty-ltd-2024-fca-457.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">ruling<\/a> on the token\u2019s legal status, which followed the regulator\u2019s 2022 allegations that BPS operated Qoin as a financial services business without a licence and misled consumers about how the product worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">This week\u2019s penalties were split between unlicensed activity and misleading representations, with the court citing the seriousness of the misconduct, senior management involvement, and risks posed to consumers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The large sum was also \u201cintended to send a strong message of deterrence to the digital asset industry,\u201d Australian Securities and Investment Commission Chair Joe Longo said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asic.gov.au\/about-asic\/news-centre\/find-a-media-release\/2026-releases\/26-008mr-bps-financial-to-pay-14-million-in-penalties-over-crypto-qoin-wallet\/\" target=\"_blank\" noopener\">warning<\/a> this week that digital asset firms and AI companies remain a priority risk area through 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Qoin tokens were allegedly marketed as an alternative for everyday transactions, with BPS Financial promoting Qoin as usable across a network of participating merchants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Those claims did not reflect reality, the court found, claiming that merchant acceptance for the token was limited and that consumers had no reliable way to convert Qoin tokens into Australian dollars or other crypto assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Local observers say the case sharpens the consumer risks around how crypto products are marketed in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cMarketing claims are not the same as consumer protections, so everyday users should [\u2026] treat performance-related promises as something to understand and verify md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">This makes \u201cregulatory oversight and enforceable standards matter because ordinary people are now the ones carrying the risk when
