On Apple Music, streams of African music as a whole have grown four times faster than the overall platform streams, with Wizkid again surpassing 10 billion global streams.\n <\/p>\n\n Industry leaders point to the African diaspora as a key driver of that global reach, helping translate regional sounds to international audiences while maintaining cultural context.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cIf African music is the fuel, the diaspora is the transmission,\u201d Basa said. \u201cIt helps carry that energy to different parts of the world.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n That exchange, he added, works in both directions, with global artists increasingly engaging African audiences directly.\n <\/p>\n
\n Pamoja has become known for its informal, unscripted atmosphere \u2014 a deliberate choice, according to organizers.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cFor us, authenticity isn\u2019t a curated aesthetic \u2014 it\u2019s the foundation,\u201d said Addy Awofisayo, head of music for sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cWhen you look at previous Pamoja events, the impact didn\u2019t come from a script,\u201d she said. \u201cIt came from people feeling seen and represented.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Awofisayo said that approach is especially important for African music and culture, which have often been framed through external perspectives.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cPamoja creates a space where the music and the culture can exist on their own terms,\u201d she said.\n <\/p>\n
\n The event draws hundreds of artists, executives and cultural leaders and is known for spontaneous moments both onstage and in the audience.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cWhen the energy is real, it builds trust and belonging,\u201d Awofisayo said. \u201cThat\u2019s when culture actually moves forward.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Organizers say Pamoja is designed to spark lasting outcomes, not just a single night of celebration.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cWith that many decision-makers in one room, the goal is to move past surface-level networking,\u201d Awofisayo said. \u201cWe want collaborations, partnerships and long-term strategies to come out of it.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
The Grammys and recognition<\/p>\n
\n This year\u2019s Grammy Awards reflect Africa\u2019s growing presence, from the Best African Music Performance category, introduced in 2024, to Kuti\u2019s posthumous honor. South African-born host Trevor Noah continues to bring African representation to one of music\u2019s largest global stages.\n <\/p>\n
\n Basa cautioned against viewing the moment as a sudden breakthrough.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt\u2019s not a beginning or a turning point,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a continuation of music that has always existed and is finally being recognized at this level.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThis is overdue recognition, not a trend.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Industry leaders say African music\u2019s next chapter will be defined by diversity rather than a single dominant sound.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThere\u2019s still much more to come,\u201d Awofisayo said, pointing to the growth of Amapiano \u2014 a popular South African hybrid genre of electronic dance music \u2014 African hip-hop, R&B and pop beyond Afrobeats.\n <\/p>\n
\n She said YouTube will continue to function as a global equalizer, allowing artists to reach international audiences without relying on traditional industry gatekeepers.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cA young artist in Johannesburg can build an audience in New York or Tokyo,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd African culture is about more than music \u2014 it\u2019s visual, it\u2019s movement, it\u2019s identity.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n For Pamoja, organizers say the goal is clear: to reflect African music\u2019s place in the global mainstream \u2014 not as a novelty, but as a permanent and influential force.\n <\/p>\n
