The family says Pineaha\u2019s sentence felt like a further blow.<\/p>\n
\u201cFour and a half years but she could be out in 18 months … it\u2019s a joke,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like my daughter\u2019s life didn\u2019t matter \u2026 where\u2019s the justice? Not just for my Emma but for my other daughter, Saige. The law system failed us.”<\/p>\n
Under New Zealand law, offenders sentenced to more than two years become eligible for parole after serving one-third of their sentence, unless the court sets a longer minimum non-parole period.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be no closure till we get what my baby deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis believed no safety improvements had taken place on Chatham Rd since Emma-Jane\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are still speeding and acting stupid on the road,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n
A Coroner\u2019s report issued last September determined no further inquiry was needed because all necessary matters had been established through the criminal proceedings.<\/p>\n
Davis said the family was waiting to meet with the Hastings District Council about establishing a pedestrian crossing where Emma-Jane was killed.<\/p>\n
The council told Hawke\u2019s Bay Today the crash was complex and the police investigation had found the road environment would not have prevented the tragedy.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil has, however, undertaken a speed count on this road, which showed that generally vehicle speeds were within acceptable limits,\u201d a council spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Another count was planned for February to see whether results were different.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will give more information on the prevalence of speeding issues in this area, and whether installing speed humps would be justified.\u201d<\/p>\n
The council spokesperson said regardless of the location, speeding was seen sporadically across the district.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe single most effective way to prevent harm is for driver behaviour to change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma-Jane\u2019s father, George Kupa, urged drivers to slow down.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust imagine if it was your child,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kupa said the family had managed the loss of Emma-Jane only by \u201csticking together as one\u201d.<\/p>\n
