she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now in her 70s, the former preschool teacher uses her artwork to share lore and wisdom that cannot be found in any books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This knowledge, passed on from her ancestors, encompasses spiritual belief, Law and creation stories \u2014 known as Tjukurpa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The children will see it and realise, &#8216;Oh, I see, this is the belief system my grandmother has recorded&#8217;,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Goodwin begins to sing the witchetty grub, or maku, songline \u2014 the Maku Tjukurpa, which is an important ancestral story for those who live in Mimili.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Songlines have been described as pathways that link landmarks and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-10-04\/significance-connection-to-country-songlines-indigenous-culture\/102925228\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102925228\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">give meaning to important places<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Artist Pauline Wangin says the waterholes where the maku are found are detailed in the artists&#8217; paintings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is crucial information as the grubs \u2014 the white wood-eating larvae of several moths \u2014 are a dietary staple in Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We saw all these rock holes as we were growing up,&#8221; &#8220;wonderful stories&#8221; as a child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They \u2026 showed us the water sources, explaining how a particular water place is related to the witchetty grub,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Today, Ms Wangin takes children to rock holes in an area called Patalpi, or Victory Well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Here, they perform ceremony, or inma, as she imparts the knowledge she learned from her parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we look after the rock holes associated with witchetty grubs, the grub numbers increase,&#8221; It stands for our living culture, moving forward, side by side, Tjungu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re building more than sculptures, we&#8217;re building pathways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Shane Dodd says the Mimili men \u2014 the wati \u2014 gather regularly to share stories, connect and create.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He feels supported when he works alongside other men from his community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Artist Shane Dodd sits on a rock with his legs closed. To everyone&#8217;s relief, it doesn&#8217;t get bogged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He lugs his guitar to the top of the nearby emu egg formation, known as Atutja, to sing to Country. This is where his uncle was born, he explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is our Country here, it belongs to our family \u2026 all of it around this side of the hill, and it goes all the way back,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They wanted me to look after it and take care of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a hat sits on a rock playing a guitar on a hill. Country is where the story can be told,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He shares a new song about the 1953 British nuclear tests at Emu Field, further south on The Lands, which forced families to relocate to other areas, including Mimili.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We abandoned that place because of plutonium, couldn&#8217;t walk back on those tracks, and the rock holes were irradiated,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Many of my family were talking about it, and they said, &#8216;One of your uncles and one of your grandmothers, you know, they were traumatised because of this great, great destruction of this atomic nuclear bomb&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sillouhette of Desmond wearing a hat.
