\n\tThe 98th Academy Awards<\/a> will limit the March 15 ceremony to only two performances of the five nominees for best original song.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent a missive to the five nominees stating that \u201cthe live performance focus will be concentrated on two musical moments this year, Sinners and KPop Demon Hunters, with segments designed to honor how music helped these stories resonate worldwide.\u201d Those songs are \u201cI Lied to You\u201d from Sinners and \u201cGolden\u201d from KPop Demon Hunters. \u00a0Variety first reported <\/a>the news, which Billboard has confirmed. Raphael Saadiq<\/a> and Ludwig G\u00f6ransson wrote \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d while \u201cGolden\u201d is credited to EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu. Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seon and Teddy Park.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe letter, which was signed by executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan and producer Taryn Hurd, stresses that each of the remaining three nominees \u201cwill be introduced through a bespoke package built from footage of the film it was written for, grounding the song firmly in its cinematic purpose.\u201d \u00a0The three signees cite \u201climited time within the broadcast,\u201d as well as a \u201cdesire to create a fast-paced, entertaining and cohesive show,\u201d for the decision.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso nominated are \u201cDear Me\u201d from Diane Warren: Relentless, music and lyrics by Warren<\/a>; \u201cTrain Dreams\u201d from Train Dreams, music by Nick Cave<\/a> and Bryce Dessner and lyrics by Cave and \u201cSweet Dreams of Joy\u201d from Viva Verdi!, music and lyrics by Nicholas Pike.\u00a0Following his Jan. 22 nomination, Pike had expressed excitement at hearing his composition <\/a>performed on the show, telling Billboard he had told soprano Ana Maria Martinez, who sings the aria, that he wasn\u2019t going to rest \u201cuntil you\u2019re singing on the Oscars<\/a> stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough nominees had expressed to Billboard that they hoped for a return to all five songs being performed during the ceremony after none was performed at the 2025 awards show, all songs being showcased in that way is not a guarantee. Since 2012, only seven ceremonies have included live performances of all the nominated songs, including the 2023 and 2024 shows. More usual has been some configuration of live performances and taped pieces, such as in 2016 when three of the five songs were performed live and the other two were represented by film clips.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe news follows the Golden Globes declining to present the best original score award<\/a> on the air at the Jan. 11 ceremony. Sinners composer G\u00f6ransson accepted his award in front of attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, but the speech was not shown on television.<\/p>\n

\n\tWarren and Pike declined to comment, while Dessner\u2019s representative did not respond to a request for comment. The Academy also declined to comment.
