By 2019, the DIY Sheds Aotearoa Charitable Trust was officially registered.<\/p>\n
The trust has since supported projects in Tauranga and Rotorua, offering courses for beginners, aspiring tradies, and anyone keen to learn while enjoying the social benefits of working together. <\/p>\n
Early support from the Tauranga Men\u2019s Shed at Tauranga Historic Village was pivotal, opening its doors three times a week for everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat support was huge,\u201d Rikirangi said. \u201cIt showed people could see the value in what we were doing \u2013 not just for women, but for the whole community.\u201d<\/p>\n
While initially focused on women, DIY Sheds now welcome everyone aged 15 years and over, with volunteers often from trade backgrounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sharing of skills across generations and cultures is pretty powerful,\u201d Rikirangi said.<\/p>\n

Soon to be operating under Karawhuia R\u014dp\u016b \u2013 \u201cGive it a Go\u201d \u2013 the organisation emphasises inclusivity, manaakitanga, and community collaborations. <\/p>\n
This year, Rotorua sees a new phase, partnering with Vertical Horizonz to set up a trades training hub, and with BCITO delivering NZQA Level 2 Building and Construction training for 18 to 24-year-olds. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s our core business,\u201d Rikirangi said. \u201cTrades training, delivered in a way that\u2019s supportive and inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karawhuia R\u014dp\u016b directors Melissa Keillor and Rikirangi are preparing a crowdfunding campaign to expand facilities, upgrade equipment, and broaden programmes.<\/p>\n
They are also keen to hear from local businesses and community-minded organisations interested in supporting the kaupapa through sponsorship, materials, expertise or in-kind support.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about building something positive together,\u201d Rikirangi said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe community has supported us from the beginning, and now we\u2019re inviting people to be part of where we\u2019re heading next.\u201d<\/p>\n
