{"id":262086,"date":"2026-02-01T06:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T06:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/262086\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T06:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T06:10:11","slug":"this-is-no-ordinary-octopus-meet-the-octopus-that-can-walk-on-land-wait-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/262086\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThis is no ordinary octopus.\u201d Meet the octopus that can walk on land \u2013 wait, what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/octopus-facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Octopuses<\/a> are renowned for their intelligence and with nine brains, it\u2019s no surprise that they\u2019re capable of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/animals-that-use-tools\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using tools<\/a>, outsmarting fishers in the search for crab and can even recognise faces.<\/p>\n<p>So luckily for many animals, they\u2019re usually confined by the tide \u2013 except for one species.<\/p>\n<p>The Abdopus octopus is found in intertidal zones along the Northern Australian coastline.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than being restricted to rockpools at low tide, the Abdopus octopus can pull itself out and crawl around using the tiny suckers on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/what-are-tentacles-and-how-do-they-differ-to-arms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arms<\/a>. It\u2019s the only octopus that\u2019s specially adapted to walk on land.<\/p>\n<p>And when filming for the BBC\u2019s The Hunt, this extraordinary behaviour was captured on camera.
