{"id":262713,"date":"2026-02-01T16:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T16:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/262713\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T16:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T16:55:08","slug":"charles-dickens-great-great-great-grandson-to-unveil-golden-dog-and-pot-sculpture-southwark-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/262713\/","title":{"rendered":"Charles Dickens\u2019 great-great-great grandson to unveil golden Dog and Pot sculpture \u2013 Southwark News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The great-great-great grandson of Charles Dickens will unveil a golden sculpture of a dog licking from a bowl outside Southwark tube station to mark the author\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>In the 19th century, Charles Dickens used to pass a sign of dog licking from a golden pot above an ironmongers at the corner of Blackfriars Road and Union Street each day as he walked to central London from his lodgings on Lant Street.<\/p>\n<p>Aged just 12 at the time, his father had recently been imprisoned for debt at Marshalsea Prison and the sign became a symbol of his endurance and ambition to succeed in life.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"430\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-17.19.00-430x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-469062\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7670545414437765;width:355px;height:auto\"  \/>The elm wood version is being moved to the Southwark Heritage Centre<\/p>\n<p>A replica of the \u2018Dog and Pot\u2019 sculpture will be formally unveiled by Ollie Dickens on next Saturday 7 February to mark both the author\u2019s 214th birthday and the 60th anniversary of the creation of the modern borough of Southwark in 1965.<\/p>\n<p>The sculpture, designed by artist Jason Brooks, will replace a nearly identical elm-wood version unveiled in 2013 by Ollie\u2019s father Mark, which will be transferred to the Southwark Heritage Centre on Walworth Road for display later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The 23.5-carat gilded version will be better able to resist the elements as gold-leaf offers a natural weather-resistant shield.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"385\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-17.19.35-385x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-469063\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.688015494766164;width:323px;height:auto\"  \/>Both dog sculptures were designed by artist Jason Brooks <\/p>\n<p>It also invokes the original sign, which survives today although it was badly damaged in the 2013 Walworth Town Hall fire.
