It is also commonly known as the &#8220;Bear Moon&#8221; to reflect the period when cubs are born and the &#8220;Hunger Moon&#8221; to evoke the lack of food in the lean winter month, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/full-moon-names\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/full-moon-names\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Old Farmer&#8217;s Almanac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-73173883-7be8-4fd5-8703-607a0b2a1ea2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>When and where<\/p>\n<p id=\"b4d79dfb-f51a-45bb-aaa2-22634cf2df8f\">The lunar disk will appear fully lit as it looms over the eastern horizon at sunset on Feb. 1 for stargazers in the U.S. To find out the exact moonrise and moonset times from your location you can use <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/moon\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TimeandDate<\/a>&#8216;s helpful calculator.<\/p>\n<p>You may notice the Snow Moon adopt a yellow-orange hue while close to the horizon, before taking on its usual silvery glow as it soars higher overhead into the January night sky. The effect occurs due to the process known as Rayleigh Scattering, wherein <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> deflects blue wavelengths of moonlight while allowing the longer red wavelengths to travel through relatively undisturbed.<\/p>\n<p>Each month&#8217;s full moon is a perfect opportunity to explore the aftermath of cataclysmic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a> impacts on the lunar surface by observing surface features called &#8220;ejecta rays&#8221;.
