A\u00a0Russian satellite identified by\u00a0Western analysts as\u00a0a\u00a0signals intelligence platform was completely destroyed following a\u00a0collision with orbital debris, according to\u00a0Swiss space monitoring firm S2A Systems.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0January 30, the satellite\u2014officially named Luch and registered under NORAD ID\u00a040258\u2014broke apart on\u00a0a\u00a0graveyard orbit, a\u00a0zone typically reserved for decommissioned satellites. <\/p>\n

The fragmentation was observed<\/a> by\u00a0S2A Systems and is\u00a0believed to\u00a0have been caused by\u00a0accidental contact with space debris. It\u00a0remains unclear whether the event was accidental or\u00a0involved a\u00a0deliberate action.<\/p>\n

Originally launched in\u00a0September 2014, the Luch satellite has long attracted attention from military and commercial spacewatchers due to\u00a0its maneuvering patterns. Unlike the Luch-5 series used for commercial communications, this satellite frequently repositioned itself along the geostationary belt, occasionally approaching other nations\u2019 satellites.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02015, the satellite maneuvered between two Intelsat communications satellites, prompting a\u00a0formal protest from the United States. Three years later, then-French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly publicly accused Russia of\u00a0attempting to\u00a0intercept secure signals when Luch moved close to\u00a0the French-Italian military satellite Athena-Fidus.<\/p>\n
