A new trailer and poster for the hotly\u00a0anticipated\u00a0Michael Jackson<\/a>\u00a0biopic\u00a0Michael<\/a>\u00a0have been released \u2013 check them out below.<\/p>\n

The film will see\u00a0the King of Pop\u2019s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson take on the title\u00a0role<\/a>\u00a0and it is expected to chart the rise of one of the most successful\u00a0pop music stars in history.<\/p>\n

The new trailer shows that much of the film will\u00a0centre\u00a0around Jackson\u2019s relationship with his overbearing father Joe \u2013 played by\u00a0Oscar<\/a>\u00a0nominee Colman Domingo \u2013 and his struggle to overcome his child-star status with the Jackson Five.<\/p>\n

Antoine Fuqua, the filmmaker behind\u00a0Training Day\u00a0and\u00a0The Equalizer, will direct\u00a0Michael, while John Logan (Gladiator,\u00a0Skyfall<\/a>) serves as screenwriter. Nia Long (Empire,\u00a0Boyz n the\u00a0Hood) will play Jackson\u2019s mother Katherine, while\u00a0Miles Teller<\/a>\u00a0will portray John Branca, the lawyer and manager who is the co-executor of the Jackson estate\u00a0and a producer on the film.<\/p>\n

The official synopsis reads: \u201cMichael\u00a0explores the global superstar\u2019s journey to become known to the world as the King\u00a0Of\u00a0Pop, presenting an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known\u201d.<\/p>\n

The release of the film was delayed due\u00a0to\u00a0reports that the final act had to be shot again due to an unsanctioned inclusion of the\u00a01993\u00a0Jordan Chandler case<\/a>, in which the dentist and screenwriter accused Jackson of sexually abusing his 13-year-old son. The case was concluded when the two parties reached a financial settlement in 1994.<\/p>\n

It is now set to be released into cinemas on April 24, with\u00a0rumours\u00a0that it would be split into two separate films being apparently unfounded<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The film has already attracted some criticism,\u00a0including from\u00a0Dan Reed, the director of the documentary\u00a0Leaving Neverland,<\/a>\u00a0which documented allegations of sexual abuse against Jackson. Reed\u00a0criticised the making of the new biopic, saying it \u201cwill glorify a man who raped children\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reed later said he had read a draft of the script in which the men who made the allegations in\u00a0Leaving Neverland\u00a0were discredited<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cJackson is only ever seen caring for children with childhood cancer, or dancing with a little girl in a wheelchair, or tucking up multiple little boys, mostly his nephews, at sleepovers,\u201d Reed\u00a0said of\u00a0the script. \u201cIt feels like the creators of the movie have been stuck in a room with John Branca and just told what to write.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson\u2019s daughter Paris, meanwhile,\u00a0has made it clear that she has had \u201czero per cent involvement\u201d with the film<\/a>, decrying a claim to the contrary from Domingo.<\/p>\n

Its release comes 17 years after Jackson\u2019s death on June 25,\u00a02009,\u00a0at the age of 50.
