{"id":265479,"date":"2026-02-03T12:11:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T12:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/265479\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T12:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T12:11:14","slug":"former-prime-minister-says-government-must-be-more-transparent-about-any-us-minerals-deal-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/265479\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Prime Minister says government must be more transparent about any US minerals deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JUAZW2_Image_93_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon lands in Whang\u0101rei to meet with Emergency Management and response teams dealing with the situation in Northland.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPhoto: NZ Herald pool \/ Dean Purcell\n<\/p>\n<p>The government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585810\/us-new-zealand-commit-to-exploring-opportunities-cooperation-on-critical-minerals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">must be more transparent about any potential minerals deal<\/a> with the United States, former Prime Minister Helen Clark says.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand is in talks with the US about the supply of rare and critical minerals, as Donald Trump seeks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/585746\/trump-launches-20-billion-minerals-stockpile-to-boost-us-manufacturing-counter-china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce America&#8217;s reliance on China for material<\/a> it sees as pivotal for tech innovation and national security.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585810\/us-new-zealand-commit-to-exploring-opportunities-cooperation-on-critical-minerals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand was among more than 40 countries talking to the US about supplying minerals<\/a>, and no Cabinet decisions had been made.<\/p>\n<p>He dismissed reporting on the talks as &#8220;speculative and hypothetical&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Clark chairs the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, which about 50 countries have signed up to &#8211; not including New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>She told Midday Report the government must be more up front about its discussions with the US.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JYR7K0_G4a4rSPaUAAF3nr_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1312\" alt=\"Christopher Luxon and Donald Trump.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nPrime Minister Christopher Luxon dismissed reporting on the talks as &#8220;speculative and hypothetical&#8221;.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied \/ Christopher Luxon via X\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re told that it will be a non-binding critical minerals framework, but as recently as the 14th of January, President Trump was threating tariffs if trading partners didn&#8217;t sign critical mineral agreements within 180 days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are we one of those countries?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4K95Q3R_the_9th_floor_ep_2_the_commander_thumb_png.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"590\" alt=\"Solo shot image of Helen Clark smiling at the camera.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nFormer Prime Minister Helen Clark.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Diego Opatowski\n<\/p>\n<p>Clark said New Zealanders needed the chance to debate the type of society, economy and environment it wanted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do we just want to throw all the concerns we&#8217;ve traditionally had for our national parks and wild places and landscapes out the window, or do we want to build on the clean and green, sustainable image that we&#8217;ve cultivated carefully over many years?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The environment would suffer if New Zealand signed up to large-scale, &#8220;destructive&#8221; mining practices, Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have vast resources in easily accessible places.
