In 2024, the African penguin was listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/22697810\/256021744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">critically endangered<\/a> by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Today, there are thought to be less than 10,000 breeding pairs left in the wild.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000f3b6pexn2u6b0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is one of the longest running seabird conservation groups in Southern Africa, focused on restoring populations through rescue missions, rehabilitation efforts and research. Founded in 1968, the organization is renowned for its work protecting African penguins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000g3b6pxrs50m4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are watching these birds every day coming in (to SANCCOB) with quite severe trauma, with emaciation problems; they are struggling a lot out in the wild,\u201d said Jade Sookhoo, a rehabilitation manager at SANCCOB.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000h3b6p2jfao6gl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the last 30 years, African penguins have suffered an estimated 80% population collapse driven by pollution, habitat destruction and food scarcity \u2014 with a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2989\/00306525.2025.2568382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> naming starvation as a leading cause of death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000i3b6pgavem9eg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study \u2014 a joint effort between South African\u2019s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and the UK\u2019s University of Exeter \u2014 found that more than 60,000 birds <a href=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-environment-science-and-economy\/penguins-starved-to-death-en-masse-as-food-supply-collapsed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">perished from malnourishment<\/a> between 2004 and 2011 on Robben and Dassen islands \u2014 two of the most important breeding areas in South Africa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000k3b6pd5yi69tw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            African penguins rely on small schooling fish, such as sardines and anchovies, as their main food source. But climate change and intensive commercial fishing have sharply reduced fish stocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000l3b6pxuwg03nq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Along the Southern African coast, sardines are becoming increasingly scarce, forcing penguins to travel much farther offshore to find food \u2014 a shift that is taking a toll on both adult survival and the livelihoods of their chicks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000n3b6p5kat2uyj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study also revealed that for nearly two decades, sardine numbers have been chronically low, hovering around 25% of what they once were \u2014 signaling a long-term collapse in the western Southern Africa region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000o3b6prbu1hv59@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And along Namibia\u2019s coast, a former African penguin stronghold, rising ocean temperatures, changes in salinity and overfishing have caused the sardine population to effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S016578362500089X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disappear<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/still-18460411-2906731-4310000003-still.jpg\" alt=\"A chick is fed sardines at SANCCOB's rehabilitation center, as part of their chick bolstering project to help rescue, rear and ultimately release young, abandoned African penguins.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000p3b6pjdx2tejo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFisheries are a huge business, and we don\u2019t want fishing to stop completely; it is a vital part of our economy,\u201d Robyn Fraser-Knowles of SANCCOB told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000q3b6pf5a1rmny@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While no single factor is solely responsible for the decline in fish stocks, she warns, \u201cif we don\u2019t start fishing less, we\u2019re going to end up with a collapsed ecosystem.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000s3b6pzgufh1l2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At its world-class rehabilitation facilities, SANCCOB provides around-the-clock medical care and support for penguins and other seabirds suffering from injuries, oil contamination, disease and other ailments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000t3b6p6wkih05m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SANCCOB admitted 948 penguins into its care last year, and they were typically \u201cthin, at best\u201d on arrival, Fraser-Knowles said. One adult penguin recently admitted weighed just 1.9 kg (4.2 lb.), less than half the optimal weight of about 4 kg (8.8 lb.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000v3b6p1k45js33@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe bodies that wash up and the ones that we treat, we can see this very, very strong trend,\u201d Fraser-Knowles said. \u201cYou don\u2019t find penguins in the wild that are the ideal body weight anymore.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000w3b6p9zc87lmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SANCCOB researcher Albert Snyman keeps a small pile of stones in his lab as a stark reminder of how severe the starvation crisis has become.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000x3b6pc1koe1l2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They were found in the stomachs of penguin chicks admitted to SANCCOB that later died, helping explain why they failed to thrive \u2014 the stones blocked their ability to absorb nutrients from the food they were being fed by staff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000y3b6p2x0oa3g9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe parents were so desperate to feed the babies something that they were feeding them stones,\u201d Fraser-Knowles said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi000z3b6ptr7zcnum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Abandonment is also an issue affecting the young. African penguin parents normally take turns caring for their chicks on land while the other forages in the sea. But with extreme weather, rising predation and longer, more distant foraging trips, they are increasingly abandoning their eggs and chicks, Fraser-Knowles says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00103b6pe8hermux@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When one parent fails to return, either because it is killed or delayed by food scarcity, the remaining parent may leave the nest to search for food, effectively deserting the chicks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00113b6pxweao55i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Malnourishment impacts the penguins in many other ways, including their annual molt, according to Dr. David Roberts, a clinical veterinarian at SANCCOB.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00123b6pcty81zrb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            African penguins undergo a yearly molt, during which they stay on land and fast for up to three weeks while they shed their worn feathers and grow new ones to keep them warm, buoyant and able to hunt in cold ocean waters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00133b6pe8p5kk3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When food is scarce, they cannot build up the fat reserves needed to survive this fast, so molting can be delayed or fail altogether.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00143b6pneozp1yq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey come in (to SANCCOB) with really old, damaged feathers and we have to feed them and kickstart that molt cycle because they just can\u2019t do it in the wild anymore,\u201d Roberts told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00153b6p12uyru71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But starvation is just one of many interconnected threats that these penguins face.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00173b6pvt1swgz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roberts says most of his surgical work is the result of trauma injuries \u2014 which can be caused by anything from pollution to plastic entanglement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00183b6pvjr0dgud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But he says, more often than not, the injuries are the result of a predator\u2019s bite \u2014 like from seals and sharks.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2183446448.jpg\" alt=\"Cape fur seals are major predators of African penguins at sea. With starvation weakening the penguins, they are less likely to evade a predator's attack.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3514\" width=\"5270\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi00193b6ppybsjzxn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Injuries and deaths from predation increase when fish are scarce, as malnourished penguins are weaker and less able to evade predators.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001a3b6pjg3yjkdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many African penguin colonies are located along major shipping routes or harbors where oil pollution remains a significant threat to the birds. Noise pollution from maritime vessels and ship-related injuries are further stressing populations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001b3b6pfwfgk8vf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With habitat loss and increased disturbances in and around their remaining habitats, \u201cthey don\u2019t breed successfully, they don\u2019t feed successfully and everything becomes more difficult for them,\u201d said Fraser-Knowles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzwvwpn00003b6p95poc76r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), a very contagious bird flu, and avian malaria also pose a significant threat to the penguins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001d3b6paqifk38e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the challenges African penguins face, there is some hope.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001e3b6ppb6pu15c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just last year, African penguins scored a major victory. In March, conservationists and the commercial fishing industry reached an agreement to establish no-take zones protecting six key breeding colonies in South Africa for 10 years. These marine protected areas prohibit all extractive activities, from fishing to mining, providing penguins with a safer environment to feed and reproduce.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001f3b6pgu6dczxb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAccording to the data, the no-take zone around Robben Island should stop the decline of that population just on that island by 2033, we hope, but of course, there are all these other factors at play,\u201d Fraser-Knowles said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001h3b6pa5yhs7u4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since its inception in 2006, SANCCOB\u2019s chick bolstering project \u2014 which rescues abandoned hatchlings \u2014 has released more than 10,000 penguins back into their native habitat.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-102618004.jpg\" alt=\"Over the past decade, SANCCOB has released an average of 81% of the African penguins in its care back into the wild.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2711\" width=\"4200\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001k3b6pq03wleia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2021, SANCCOB established the world\u2019s first man-made protected penguin colony in De Hoop Nature Reserve, where released penguins have now begun to breed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001l3b6p4tpiwaq7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fraser-Knowles said success in the next five to 10 years will require stabilizing wild colonies, expanding no-take zones beyond current recommendations and significantly reducing sardine and anchovy fishing quotas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001m3b6p7zfm8cq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She emphasized that consumer choices also matter: cutting back on livestock feed and pet food that contains fish, and opting to eat sustainably caught species listed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwfsassi.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sassi-Pocket-Guide-2025-update-DIGITAL-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WWF SASSI seafood guide<\/a>, are steps people can make toward protecting African penguins, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkzstnfi001n3b6pq1n03jox@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are an indicator species, and their decline is signaling that our ecosystem is in serious trouble,\u201d she added. \u201cIf they don\u2019t have food security, then the trickle-down effect
