Ex-Megadeth<\/a> bassist David Ellefson<\/a> has shared his opinion on the band\u2019s final studio album \u2014 what he deems to be a Dave Mustaine<\/a> \u201csolo record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellefson was unceremoniously ousted from Megadeth in 2021. Though he recorded bass for the band\u2019s penultimate effort The Sick, the Dying\u2026 and the Dead!, Mustaine opted to have Ellefson\u2019s bass parts re-recorded as James LoMenzo returned to take his place.<\/p>\n

The current studio\/touring lineup of Mustaine, LoMenzo, drummer Dirk Verbeuren, and guitarist Teemu M\u00e4ntysaari appear on Megadeth\u2019s latest and final album, but Ellefson wasn\u2019t convinced. On the latest episode of his podcast<\/a>, the bassist offered up his take.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear it and I go, \u2018Okay this is a Dave solo record.\u2019 This is Dave and his new band, Dave and his new guys,\u201d Ellefson said (as transcribed by The PRP<\/a>). \u201cIt says Megadeth, so obviously it gets all the attention, but realistically I hear it, and to me it just doesn\u2019t sound like Megadeth. And that\u2019s just me, period. You know? It\u2019s like Dave, doing what Dave does, but with a different set of guys in a new day. And this is Dave\u2018s retirement, you know? So that\u2019s my view on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Ellefson pointed out the irony of Mustaine re-recording Metallica\u2019s \u201cRide the Lightning.\u201d<\/a> Mustaine helped co-write the song, but Kirk Hammett did write his own solos for the final composition recorded by Metallica.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funny thing is [Mustaine] was mad at Kirk Hammett [Metallica guitarist] for playing his [Mustaine\u2019s] solos and now here\u2019s Dave playing Kirk\u2018s solo, unless that\u2019s Teemu.\u201d<\/p>\n

No matter Ellefson\u2019s opinion of the album, the self-titled effort is a success on the charts, landing Megadeth their first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard 200<\/a>.<\/p>\n
