{"id":267284,"date":"2026-02-04T14:09:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/267284\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T14:09:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:09:21","slug":"scientist-takes-helm-at-newark-museum-of-art-with-400000-salary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/267284\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientist takes helm at Newark Museum of Art with $400,000 salary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SP4RS6IJ5JHIXDY3K3V64SEEAQ\">The new director and CEO of the Newark Museum of Art is a trained scientist and career arts administrator whom the board hopes will \u201cintegrate both science and art into the museum experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7MBXIGWEEFDNNBPMCWJKOUNLSA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisa_Funderburke_Hoffman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lisa Funderburke<\/a>, 55, a Long Island native who earned a bachelor\u2019s in botany and a master\u2019s in biology from Howard University, began her $400,000 job as director and CEO of the state\u2019s largest arts museum on Sunday, the NMOA board announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BI6DDX5IXNEHZFRE5BFR2FA4AY\">\u201cLisa brings to the museum a unique breadth and depth of experience as a museum and arts leader,\u201d the board\u2019s chair, Peter Englot, said in a Jan. 23 announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3ZZ7ATME65DTBI5NSGOKYQ5UBA\">Funderburke succeeds Linda C. Harrison, who announced in November 2024 that she would be stepping down after six years in the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DKQGKHRIW5GWDM24EIO52XRUPE\">Harrison\u2019s stint included extending the 115-year-old painting and sculpture gallery\u2019s reputation as a culturally inclusive institution, deepening its roots in the surrounding community, and presiding over planning and approval of 250 apartments and 4,216 square feet of new gallery space on the museum\u2019s downtown campus along Washington Place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PAN7ZOZP5VBKTAHDITSKNIP7HY\">The board highlighted Funderburke\u2019s scholarship on governance and strategy in service to the arts, and her decade of experience as president and CEO of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dealist.org\/en\/nonprofit\/b527342009324b8a8369f54cc33e4cd9-artist-communities-alliance-providence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Artist Communities Alliance<\/a> based in Providence, Rhode Island, which supports artists and residency programs in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7EVDXGQIGVHSZN6KDUO2XO7QFE\">In a statement, Funderburke said, \u201cMuseums are most vital when they are responsive, collaborative, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZHYAP56735AHRN7JDZTJ72EMGE\">\u201cThroughout my career, I have seen how cultural institutions function as essential civic infrastructure,\u201d she added. \u201cI am excited to work with the Newark community and broader networks of artists and partners to position the museum as a leader in national and global conversations about art, science, and cultural exchange \u2014 stewarding the museum as a shared public space for learning, creativity, and dialogue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HGKOTTPKCVAETL3X4W3JAHKURA\">Funderburke, who is also known professionally as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisa_Funderburke_Hoffman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lisa Funderburke Hoffman<\/a>, had also worked as associate director of the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has also been affiliated with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Performing Arts Alliance, Orion Magazine, the Center for Cultural Innovation, and the Grantmakers in the Arts\u2019 Individual Artist Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LAQM2EV3QVERHDPQX2W426DOFQ\">She will preside over a private but mostly publicly funded nonprofit institution with an extensive collection of more than 300,000 works concentrated on African, Asian and American paintings and sculpture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5YYTCHOBWVCTZFFWEVPGMXCA64\">The collection also features objects of scientific and cultural significance, including a 1784 schoolhouse on its property and the adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ballantine_House\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Ballantine House<\/a>, the restored and re-interpreted mansion of one of Newark\u2019s 19th-century beer barons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XT3VKLUAS5CH5OXCFRROG6QMMY\">As of last year, the museum had a budget of $18 million and a staff of 86 full-time and 69 part-time employees, on a 4-acre campus that includes the new development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OVNDULQGU5EU3NOIJGOJ5EDCSI\">The museum anchors the eastern end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/newarkartsandeducation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Newark Arts &amp; Entertainment District<\/a>, conceived by Harrison and designated by Mayor Ras J.
