Let\u2019s all say it together: Thank you, Pedro Pascal. It\u2019s been a year and a half since Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of the gay romance he was set to star in from acclaimed director Todd Haynes<\/a>, leaving the rest of the cast, crew, and production team in the lurch. The explicit queer noir De Noche seemed all but dead in the water until late last summer, when it was rumored that Pascal might be able to save the film<\/a>. On February 4, it was announced that Pascal would officially step into Phoenix\u2019s role<\/a> and shooting can get underway next month. De Noche, which Haynes wrote with frequent collaborator Jon Raymond, tells the story of a Los Angeles cop (Pascal) and a boarding-school teacher (Danny Ramirez) who take up an affair in the 1930s amid the corruption of the times.<\/p>\n

Pascal has been kind of omnipresent the past year, starring in three films (Materialists; The Fantastic Four: First Steps; and Eddington, alongside his former role haver Phoenix) and The Last of Us. He has The Mandalorian and Grogu and Avengers: Doomsday out later this year. It\u2019s easy, perhaps, to cry \u201coverexposure,\u201d but doing these big-budget projects can often allow actors to step away and do smaller films without risking their career. So we probably also have to thank the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Cinematic Universe for this Haynes movie finally getting off the ground. Who knew Grogu would prove himself useful?<\/p>\n
