Because they are cooler than their surroundings they appear dark from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> and are often associated with short-lived explosions known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flares<\/a> as well as powerful <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejections (CMEs)<\/a> \u2014 vast expulsions of plasma driven by violent shifts in the sun&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earths-magnetic-field-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"f0330ba4-b175-4814-a215-d23b436ef59b-1\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/sun-unleashes-extraordinary-solar-flare-barrage-as-new-volatile-sunspot-turns-toward-earth\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/sun-unleashes-extraordinary-solar-flare-barrage-as-new-volatile-sunspot-turns-toward-earth\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/sun\/sun-unleashes-extraordinary-solar-flare-barrage-as-new-volatile-sunspot-turns-toward-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sunspot region 4366<\/a> is a particularly impressive specimen, having grown significantly since it rotated into view on Jan. 30. It has since unleashed over 20 powerful M- and X-class solar flares \u2014 the most potent category of solar flare \u2014 triggering radio blackouts upon reaching Earth.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"8409c21f-2b0b-4953-8a16-1d97b942c51d\">Quality protective eyewear must be used at all times when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">observing the sun<\/a>, as doing so without it can lead to permanent vision loss. If you want to spot AR4366 for yourself, you&#8217;ll need a pair of solar eclipse glasses to nullify the sun&#8217;s intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation and remember, standard off-the-shelf sunglasses won&#8217;t offer adequate protection.<\/p>\n<p>With the proper equipment, AR4366 will appear as a small black blotch close to the center of the solar disk, positioned a little above the sun&#8217;s equator.
