{"id":267981,"date":"2026-02-04T23:15:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T23:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/267981\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T23:15:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T23:15:14","slug":"deep-sea-explorers-film-massive-animal-drifting-through-darkness-in-south-atlantic-ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/267981\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep-sea explorers film massive animal drifting through darkness in South Atlantic Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute have uncovered an array of remarkable finds off the coast of Argentina, including the world\u2019s largest known\u00a0Bathelia candida\u00a0coral reef, 28 new animal species and the country\u2019s first deep-water whale fall\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a whale\u00a0carcass that sinks to the ocean floor.<\/p>\n<p>Using a remotely operated vehicle known as ROV\u00a0SuBastian, the team also stumbled upon a rare giant phantom jelly (Stygiomedusa gigantea). These titans of the deep ocean have four long arms that can grow up to 10 metres long \u2013 that\u2019s as long as a school bus \u2013 while their bell can reach up to 1 metre in diameter.<\/p>\n<p>Footage from the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) shows a giant phantom jelly drifting through the darkness off the coast of Argentina. Credit: ROV\u00a0SuBastian | Schmidt Ocean Institute<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were not expecting to see this level of biodiversity in the Argentine deep sea and are so excited to see it teeming with life,\u201d says the expedition\u2019s chief scientist, Mar\u00eda Emilia Bravo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing all the biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and connectivity unfolding together was incredible. We opened a window into our country\u2019s biodiversity only to find there are so many more windows left to be opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Whale-fall-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Whale fall\" class=\"wp-image-151341\"\/>Whale fall recorded at a depth of 3,890 metres. Credit: ROV SuBastian | Schmidt Ocean Institute<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s research area spanned the length of Argentina&#8217;s coast, from Buenos Aires in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south. Their main goal was to find cold seeps \u2013 deep-sea environments where methane and other chemicals are released from the seafloor.<\/p>\n<p>Cold seeps provide energy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/facts-about-microbiomes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microbes<\/a>, which in turn are a source of food and nutrition for animals such as tube worms, mussels and clams. Credit: ROV SuBastian | Schmidt Ocean Institute<\/p>\n<p>Another notable find was a vast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-coral-reefs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coral reef<\/a> made up of a stony cold-water coral known as\u00a0Bathelia candida, which provides important habitat for fish, crustaceans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/squid-vs-octopus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">octopuses<\/a>.\u00a0Bathelia\u00a0has been recorded throughout the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, however, the reefs found during this latest expedition extend its range 600 kilometres (373 miles) further south than was previously known.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the 3,000-metre-deep Malvinas Trough, off the coast of Tierra del Fuego, the researchers observed large sponges sheltering bubblegum coral gardens (Paragorgia arborea) \u2013 the branch tips of these ancient white, red or salmon-coloured corals are bulbous, giving them their bubblegum name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bubblegum-coral-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Bubblegum coral\" class=\"wp-image-151347\"\/>Bubblegum corals filmed by ROV pilots at a depth of 500 metres on the southern flank of the Malvinas Trench.
