{"id":268016,"date":"2026-02-04T23:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T23:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/268016\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T23:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T23:45:09","slug":"dga-awards-2026-predictions-history-and-oscars-implications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/268016\/","title":{"rendered":"DGA Awards 2026 Predictions, History and Oscars Implications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt may be Super Bowl weekend, but in Hollywood, another playoff-style contest is commanding attention \u2014 one Oscar pundits and awards analysts will be watching closely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Directors Guild of America will hold its 78th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/dga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dga\" data-tag=\"dga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DGA<\/a> Awards on Saturday, hosted by Oscar and Emmy-nominated comedian Kumail Nanjiani.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/awards\/dga-awards-nominees-2026-1236626236\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DGA nominations were announced<\/a> on Jan. 8, the Oscar races for best picture and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/lists\/2026-oscars-best-director-predictions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">best director<\/a> appeared all but nailed. But since then, the contest has tightened into somewhat of a nail-biter after <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/oscar-nominations-2026-sinners-one-battle-after-another-1236632380\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Oscar nominations presented two films<\/a> \u2014 \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and \u201cSinners\u201d \u2014 leading the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe DGA Awards voting period closes on Friday, Feb. 6, one day before the ceremony and 19 days before final Oscar voting opens. The DGA ceremony is widely regarded as one of the most essential Oscar precursors. The DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film has been a reliable predictor of the Academy Award for best director. The five DGA nominees are:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paul-thomas-anderson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-thomas-anderson\" data-tag=\"paul-thomas-anderson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a>, \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d (Warner Bros.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ryan-coogler\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ryan-coogler\" data-tag=\"ryan-coogler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Coogler<\/a>, \u201cSinners\u201d (Warner Bros.)<\/p>\n<p>Guillermo del Toro, \u201cFrankenstein\u201d (Netflix)<\/p>\n<p>Josh Safdie, \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d (A24)<\/p>\n<p>Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, \u201cHamnet\u201d (Focus Features)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCoogler\u2019s nomination is historic, becoming only the fifth Black director ever recognized in the category and the first since Spike Lee for \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d (2018). The other previous Black nominees include Jordan Peele (\u201cGet Out\u201d), Barry Jenkins (\u201cMoonlight\u201d) and Lee Daniels (\u201cPrecious\u201d). No Black filmmaker has ever won the DGA\u2019s top directing prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMeanwhile, Zhao has her own record with her nomination for \u201cHamnet.\u201d After winning the Oscar and DGA prize for \u201cNomadland\u201d (2020), she now joins Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow and Greta Gerwig as the only women to earn multiple DGA nominations. Only 12 women have ever been nominated in the category, and Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated twice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis also marks the second time in DGA history that a majority of nominees in the top category come from filmmakers from underrepresented communities. The first occurred in 2017, with winners Guillermo Del Toro (\u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d), Greta Gerwig (\u201cLady Bird\u201d) and Jordan Peele (\u201cGet Out\u201d), alongside Christopher Nolan (\u201cDunkirk\u201d) and Martin McDonagh (\u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri\u201d). Coincidentally, Del Toro returns to the lineup this year with his second nom for \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d but he\u2019s the only director not nominated for the Oscar. The last DGA winner that wasn\u2019t nominated for the Oscar was Ben Affleck for \u201cArgo\u201d (2012), which still went on to win best picture.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DGA-Sean-Baker.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"682\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen assessing this year\u2019s DGA lineup, no contender enters the phase two of awards season with more momentum than Warner Bros.\u2019 \u201cSinners,\u201d which scored a historic 16 Oscar nominations \u2014 the most in history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince its inception, the DGA has correctly predicted the Academy Award winner for best director in all but eight instances:<\/p>\n<p>1968: Anthony Harvey, \u201cThe Lion in Winter\u201d; Oscar went to Carol Reed for \u201cOliver!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>1972: Francis Ford Coppola, \u201cThe Godfather\u201d; Oscar went to Bob Fosse for \u201cCabaret\u201d<\/p>\n<p>1985: Steven Spielberg, \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d; not nominated for the Oscar<\/p>\n<p>1995: Ron Howard, \u201cApollo 13\u201d; not nominated for the Oscar<\/p>\n<p>2000: Ang Lee, \u201cCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon\u201d; Oscar went to Steven Soderbergh for \u201cTraffic\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2002: Rob Marshall, \u201cChicago\u201d; Oscar went to Roman Polanski for \u201cThe Pianist\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2012: Ben Affleck, \u201cArgo\u201d; not nominated for the Oscar<\/p>\n<p>2019: Sam Mendes, \u201c1917\u201d; Oscar went to Bong Joon Ho for \u201cParasite\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLast year, Sean Baker won the DGA\u2019s top honor for \u201cAnora,\u201d which went on to win four individual <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars<\/a>, including best picture, director, original screenplay and film editing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA win for Coogler would reshape the race and solidify his status as the clear Oscar frontrunner in a category that has yet to recognize a Black directing winner. Still, Paul Thomas Anderson \u2014 the season\u2019s early juggernaut \u2014 remains a formidable contender among pundits. Earning his third career DGA nomination, following \u201cThere Will Be Blood\u201d (2007) and \u201cLicorice Pizza\u201d (2021), Anderson also receives an emotional boost tied to the late Adam Somner, his longtime first assistant director, who died in Nov. 2024 \u2014 a loss likely to resonate with DGA voters. It is followed at a distance by the non-Oscar-nominated \u201cOrwell: 2+2=5\u201d and the self-distributed \u201cMy Undesirable Friends: Part I \u2014 Last Air in Moscow.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPoitras and Chernov have both won this category before \u2014 Poitras for \u201cCitizenfour\u201d and Chernov for \u201c20 Days in Mariupol.\u201d Only three filmmakers have won more than once: Matthew Heineman (2015, 2017, 2022), Jehane Noujaim (2001, 2004, 2013) and Barbara Kopple (1991, 1993). Neither Poitras nor Chernov is expected to join that list this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile \u201cCutting Through Rocks\u201d is critically acclaimed and has strong international support \u2014 and could echo a winning partnership like last year\u2019s victors, Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev, for \u201cPorcelain War\u201d \u2014 it may lack the kind of singular, visionary style the branch often rewards. A similar case can be made for Elizabeth Lo\u2019s well-regarded \u201cMistress Dispeller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat leaves Geeta Gandbhir, who made Oscar history as the first Indian woman to receive double nominations in the same year. She is only the second Indian woman ever nominated in documentary feature, following Nisha Pahuja for \u201cTo Kill a Tiger\u201d (2023). The nominees are:<\/p>\n<p>Hasan Hadi, \u201cThe President\u2019s Cake\u201d (Sony Pictures Classics)<\/p>\n<p>Harry Lighton, \u201cPillion\u201d (A24)<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Polinger, \u201cThe Plague\u201d (IFC)<\/p>\n<p>Alex Russell, \u201cLurker\u201d (Mubi)<\/p>\n<p>Eva Victor, \u201cSorry, Baby\u201d (A24)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPast winners in this category include Alex Garland (\u201cEx Machina\u201d), Jordan Peele (\u201cGet Out\u201d), Bo Burnham (\u201cEighth Grade\u201d), Charlotte Wells (\u201cAftersun\u201d), Celine Song (\u201cPast Lives\u201d) and RaMell Ross (\u201cNickel Boys\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe race appears to be narrowing to a three-way showdown between Lighton \u2014 buoyed by three BAFTA nominations \u2014 Polinger, whose film earned three Independent Spirit Award noms, including best feature, and Victor, another breakout favorite with significant traction from both the Indie Spirit and Gotham Awards. This often comes down to visibility, so perhaps that gives the edge to Victor, whose film received a shout-out from Julia Roberts at the Golden Globes earlier in January. Could that have helped?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNotably, the Producers Guild of America, which announced its nominees on Jan. 9, closed voting Tuesday, Feb. 3, well ahead of its Feb. 28 ceremony. That timetable places PGA and DGA voting early in the phase two window, just 10 to 12 days after Oscar nominations are revealed. The compressed schedule can signal an \u201cearly\u201d momentum shift rather than allowing time for a late-breaking surge. A similar scenario played out during the 72nd DGA Awards, held Jan. 25, 2020 \u2014 also 12 days after the 92nd Academy Award nominations were announced \u2014 when Sam Mendes won the DGA prize for his World War I epic \u201c1917\u201d (2019). Final Oscar voting that year ran from Jan. 30 to Feb. 4. Yet less than two weeks later, \u201cParasite\u201d and director Bong Joon Ho made history at the Oscars, winning best picture, director, original screenplay and international feature on Feb. 19, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/The-Studio-The-Oner.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tApple TV+<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe TV races could ultimately fall within familiar parameters, with \u201cThe Pitt, \u201d whose pilot was directed by John Wells, poised to take the drama prize and \u201cThe Studio,\u201d led by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg\u2019s showy sophomore season episode \u201cThe Oner,\u201d emerging triumphant in comedy. Still, the potential for disruption remains with eyes on \u201cAndor\u201d and \u201cHacks,\u201d helmed by Janus Metz and Lucia Aniello.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith \u201cAdolescence\u201d ineligible for DGA recognition, the door is open in the limited series category for new contenders to step into the spotlight. Netflix dominates the field, claiming four of the five directing slots, including DGA winner Jason Bateman for \u201cBlack Rabbit,\u201d former DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter for \u201cZero Day,\u201d and first-time nominees Antonio Campos for \u201cThe Beast in Me\u201d and Ally Pankiw, also for \u201cBlack Mirror.\u201d They face last year\u2019s Emmy nominee Shannon Murphy, director of  the Michelle Williams vehicle \u201cDying for Sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRecency bias often plays a decisive role, and Bateman, earning his fourth career DGA nomination after a three-year run with \u201cOzark,\u201d enters as a familiar name. A win here could position him as an early force in the Emmys 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUntil then, we wait for the DGA Awards to cast their final votes. The final Academy voting runs from Feb. 26 through Mar. 5.
