That was well above the roughly $160 billion analysts expected.\n<\/p>\n<p> Why This Is Significant <\/p>\n<p>Several of Amazon&#8217;s Big Tech peers, including cloud leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/why-microsoft-stock-is-tumbling-thursday-msft-11894986\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/google-says-its-spending-could-double-this-year-amid-ai-push-investors-dont-seem-excited-googl-11900092\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, also saw shares take a hit recently after announcing larger-than-expected spending forecasts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement that the company expects a &#8220;strong long-term return&#8221; on its investments. He pointed to signals of strong demand at Amazon&#8217;s cloud segment, which recorded its fastest growth in 13 quarters and which Jassy said on Thursdays&#8217; conference call would be the main recipient of the company&#8217;s spending.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> Amazon Web Services revenue grew 24% year-over-year to $35.6 billion in the fourth quarter, above analysts&#8217; estimates. That helped propel Amazon&#8217;s total revenue for the quarter to a record $213.4 billion. Earnings per share, however, came in just short of the analyst consensus at $1.95.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block finance-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\"> Amazon said it expects first-quarter revenue of\u00a0$173.5 billion and $178.5 billion.
