Here\u2019s How to Opt Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"u-speakableText-p1\">Starlink customers are the latest grist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/best-ai-chatbots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> mill. The company updated its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/legal\/documents\/DOC-1000-41799-67\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">privacy policy<\/a> on Jan. 15 to allow harvesting of user data for AI training. Customers are opted in by default, but it\u2019s relatively simple to opt out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"u-speakableText-p2\">Starlink says that it may use your personal information \u201cto train our machine learning or artificial intelligence models.\u201d The policy adds that this data might also be shared with third parties \u201cfor training artificial intelligence models, including for their own independent purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, when I checked my own Starlink account, I was greeted with a message telling me, \u201cYou allow your data to be used to train AI models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"screenshot of starlink showing AI disclaimer\" height=\"532.6732673267327\" width=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p>Starlink automatically opts you into allowing personal information to be used to train AI models.<\/p>\n<p> Starlink \/ CNET<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s part of this whole rush to just throw everything into the data-driven machine-learning nexus, and then hoping something more good will come out of it, your private information be damned,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/about\/staff\/william-budington\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">William Budington<\/a>, a technologist for the digital rights nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, told CNET.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What data Starlink is gobbling up is the big question. The privacy policy outlines the typical data you\u2019d expect an internet provider to collect: contact information, performance metrics and billing details. But Starlink also says it may collect \u201ccommunication information, such as audio, electronic or visual information\u201d and, cryptically, \u201cinferences we may make from other personal information we collect.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/support\/article\/b82cf54a-8e57-917a-bd06-2765642f4a64\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">separate Starlink page<\/a> says, \u201cYour internet history will never be shared with AI models, including individual browsing habits or geolocation tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traffic on most sites is encrypted through the HTTPS standard, which means Starlink won\u2019t\u00a0necessarily be able to use your emails or personal communications to train AI. Still, the sites you visit (and when you visit them) are incredibly useful to companies training AI models &#8212; and potentially damaging to individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a number of dangers here,\u201d said Buddington. \u201cThere&#8217;s the danger of AI prompt engineering in generative AI models, and that prompt engineering leading to the AI being able to produce the original data that was fed into the training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a 2023 article in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/your-personal-information-is-probably-being-used-to-train-generative-ai-models\/\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">Scientific American<\/a> put it, \u201cAI models can regurgitate the same material that was used to train them &#8212; including sensitive personal data and copyrighted work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AI addition to Starlink\u2019s privacy policy came just two weeks before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/elon-musks-spacex-acquiring-xai-space-data-centers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX announced<\/a> that it was acquiring another Musk company, xAI. Starlink currently has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Starlink\/status\/2003263462554894450?s=20\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">more than 9 million<\/a> customers worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How to opt out of Starlink\u2019s AI training<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want your data to be used to train AI models, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"529111b8-fef4-478e-9b3d-0216206e82e6\" href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/support\/article\/b82cf54a-8e57-917a-bd06-2765642f4a64\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" class=\"c-regularLink\">opting out of Starlink\u2019s new policy<\/a> is relatively simple, and you can do it from either the app or website.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, you need to log in, navigate to the account portal and click the section that says Privacy Preferences. From there, uncheck the box that allows Starlink to use your data to train AI models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll then see a statement under your account information that says, \u201cYour data will not be used to train AI models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if you opt out, you should still use a VPN<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re concerned about your personal data being used to train AI models by Starlink or anyone else, the best thing you can do is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/best-vpn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">use a VPN you trust<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will encrypt your communications right through to the VPN, so that Starlink doesn&#8217;t have any insight into your internet communications,\u201d Budington said. \u201cThat\u2019s the best way to protect yourself against your data winding up in Starlink\u2019s training data that they&#8217;re feeding to AI models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, unless you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/how-to-install-a-vpn-on-your-router-my-easy-10-minute-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">install a VPN on your router<\/a> directly, you\u2019ll have to connect to each device individually to protect it.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Starlink customers are the latest grist for the AI mill.
