The drawing is barely bigger than a hand. And it depicts only a foot, with its heel slightly raised off the ground and the outline of a shadow underneath.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmq0004356p77nmd1qt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet on Thursday, it sold for $27.2 million including fees at a Christie\u2019s sale in New York after the auction house identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/03\/style\/michelangelo-smk-3d-printing-factum-arte\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michelangelo<\/a> as the artist responsible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr0005356pv3nl63m7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Renaissance master sketched out this foot using red chalk in preparation for one of his frescoes on the Sistine Chapel ceiling at the Vatican, which he painted between 1508 and 1512.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr0006356pv6fkie25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you peer closely at the Libyan Sibyl on the chapel\u2019s ceiling, an enormous figure turning to place a book behind herself, you can spot the corresponding foot twisted into exactly the same shape \u2014 toes slightly scrunched, heel raised off the ground, a shadow beneath.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-1309914484.jpg\" alt=\"The Libyan Sibyl on the Sistine Chapel ceiling in the Vatican was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2984\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlasrg44000h356plj048lk9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She is one of 12 figures who decorate the edge of the ceiling, flanking the central frescoes that depict nine scenes from Genesis, the first book of the Bible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr0007356p9ptgnau9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cStanding in front of this drawing, one can grasp the full power of Michelangelo\u2019s creative force; we can almost feel the physical energy with which he rendered the form of the foot, pressing the red chalk vigorously onto the paper,\u201d Giada Damen, a specialist in Christie\u2019s Old Master Drawings Department who identified the drawing, said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr0008356poeokgnmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The drawing offers a rare insight into the workings of Michelangelo. The vast majority of his sketches were lost over time, some burnt by Michelangelo himself, others destroyed by early collectors or simply during the process of his work, Christie\u2019s said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr0009356py8xg82z5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only two sketches related to the Libyan Sibyl remain \u2014 one in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In total, only 50 of the Sistine Chapel remain and no other ones have ever come to auction, according to Christie\u2019s.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2025-05-08t192435z-636717699-rc2tdea8h43g-rtrmadp-3-pope-succession-leo.JPG\" alt=\"Pope Leo XIV stands in the Sistine Chapel among cardinals after being elected in May last year.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas5zmr000a356pma7wa1ab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So when this sketch was discovered and auctioned, it sparked a bidding war, eventually selling for almost 20 times its original estimate and becoming the most expensive Michelangelo work sold at auction.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlas3zra0000356pi8d5bytp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even though the sketch was previously unknown to scholars, there were some clues to its provenance. Michelangelo\u2019s name appears at the bottom left of the drawing in the same handwriting as the inscription on the Met\u2019s, and, after months of detective work by Damen, leading experts on the artist unanimously agreed he drew this foot, Christie\u2019s said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlasfl3y000e356pc95a5f3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The same family owned the drawing for more than 200 years, after Armand Francois Louis de Mestral de Saint-Saphorin \u2014 a Swiss diplomat working for the King of Denmark \u2014 acquired it during his travels around Europe in the 18th century. He passed it on to his nephew, and his descendants kept the drawing, until they decided to auction it.
