Astronomers can detect it only by looking at its gravitational effects on baryonic, or &#8220;ordinary,&#8221; matter. Researchers pointed JWST at this space for 255 hours, constructing a picture of its visible matter, including stars, galaxies and cosmic dust. From these observations, they identified nearly 800,000 galaxies \u2014 10 times more than ground-based telescopes have seen in the same region, and nearly twice as many as the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> has spotted there.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"d57566ed-b01a-45b2-b960-527b77947990\">Next, the team charted how the mass of this area&#8217;s invisible dark matter warped the space around it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previously, we were looking at a blurry picture of dark matter,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/diana-scognamiglio\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/diana-scognamiglio\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Diana Scognamiglio<\/a>, an astrophysicist at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and co-lead author of the paper, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-dark-matters-influence-on-universe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-dark-matters-influence-on-universe\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;Now, we&#8217;re seeing the invisible scaffolding of the universe in stunning detail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-699b25db-4c2c-4155-ac9f-ab0a2c3f43ab\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Where galaxies come from<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/QYprFv6JYmKNrXFzySZ7aQ.jpg\" alt=\"Two dark matter maps, showing blue blobs on black backgrounds. Pagan)<\/p>\n<p id=\"e374a040-84c3-43a9-9856-47c3200027b8\">This detailed map could give scientists a better idea of how dark matter has shaped the evolution of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/65700-big-bang-theory.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/65700-big-bang-theory.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/65700-big-bang-theory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Bang<\/a>, dark matter and ordinary matter were probably evenly distributed throughout space. But over time, dark matter began to clump together. This, in turn, pulled the ordinary matter into increasingly dense pockets, where it eventually collected enough mass to spark star formation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1059eb8f-1076-4f1d-a405-d62ea30ad4ff\">In this way, dark matter was instrumental in creating the current layout and matter distribution of the cosmos. &#8220;This map provides stronger evidence that without dark matter, we might not have the elements in our galaxy that allowed life to appear,&#8221; study co-author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/jrhodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/jrhodes\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jason Rhodes<\/a>, a senior research scientist at JPL, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Scognamiglio and her team plan to keep mapping dark matter in the future. They intend to use NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-powerful-new-roman-space-telescope-is-complete-and-will-soon-begin-mission-to-find-100-000-alien-worlds\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-powerful-new-roman-space-telescope-is-complete-and-will-soon-begin-mission-to-find-100-000-alien-worlds\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-powerful-new-roman-space-telescope-is-complete-and-will-soon-begin-mission-to-find-100-000-alien-worlds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope<\/a>, which is scheduled to launch later this year, to study an area 4,400 times the size of the region from the new study.
