{"id":271611,"date":"2026-02-07T02:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T02:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/271611\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T02:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T02:09:08","slug":"questions-raised-over-communication-delay-during-black-cat-ferry-grounding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/271611\/","title":{"rendered":"Questions raised over communication delay during Black Cat ferry grounding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/4JTOK8X_Black_Cat_Cruises_boat_jfif.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"472\" alt=\"A new photo of the Black Cat Cruises boat shows that its wreck is now on shore.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nThe wrecked catamaran after the incident.<br \/>\nPhoto: Environment Canterbury\n<\/p>\n<p>Questions are being raised over delays in communication to passengers, after a tourist ferry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585562\/more-than-40-rescued-before-tourist-boat-capsized-at-akaroa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ran aground in Akaroa Harbour last weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 40 people were rescued from the Black Cat Cruises catamaran, when it ran into difficulty at Nikau Palm Valley Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Passenger Chris Friedman wondered why little information was given to passengers immediately after the catamaran struck the seabed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once the crew knew that there was an issue, when the boat started to lift and smoke was coming into the galley, and water was coming in as well, that&#8217;s when we put on our life preservers and they did handle it properly,&#8221; Freidman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Other than being a little shaken and an adrenaline rush, nobody was injured and, thankfully so, everybody was able to safely evacuate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Friedman said he has been told standard maritime practice was to limit communication until the situation was clear to avoid causing panic.<\/p>\n<p>RNZ has approached Black Cat Crusies for a response to the claims.<\/p>\n<p>After the incident, passengers were taken to the main wharf at Akaroa.<\/p>\n<p>The Canterbury Regional Council said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/586048\/swells-dislodge-wrecked-catamaran-from-rocks-in-akaroa-harbour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrecked catamaran has split<\/a>, with its hulls on the seabed and the superstructure on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>The catamaran was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585629\/over-2000-litres-of-fuel-leaks-from-akaroa-shipwreck-into-ocean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carrying 2240 litres of marine diesel fuel<\/a>, and about 120 litres of other oils in sealed containers and engines combined when it ran aground.<\/p>\n<p>Friedman said he received a full refund for last week&#8217;s trip on Wednesday &#8211; which was reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Black Cat Cruises announced its tours had resumed normal schedules.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The wrecked catamaran after the incident.
