Though the focus of this week\u2019s fifth episode of \u201cStar Trek: Starfleet Academy\u201d was on Kerrice Brooks\u2019 holographic character SAM, it also served another purpose.<\/p>\n

Titled \u201cSeries Acclimation Mil,\u201d the episode served as a bookend to \u201cStar Trek: Deep Space Nine\u201d as SAM sets out to investigate the disappearance of Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) hundreds of years earlier in the series finale of the show.<\/p>\n

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD<\/p>\n

The episode saw the return of Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko, albeit a holographic and later a dream version of the character, and touched upon the impact that Sisko\u2019s disappearance \u2013 namely to live in the Celestial Temple with the Bajoran prophets \u2013 had on Jake.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Variety<\/a>, Lofton praised Kerrice, calling her a \u201cperfect scene partner\u2026she elevated every moment. Her ability to channel emotions and really get in depth was just mind blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The end of the episode also features a piece of dialogue from Avery Brooks, with Lofton revealing to the trade the speech comes from an album Brooks recorded years ago.<\/p>\n

Lofton says: \u201cIt\u2019s a way for me to hear his voice in another way, because he has such a signature voice, and because it\u2019s so compelling, hearing it in this episode meant a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-showrunner Noga Landau tells Polygon<\/a>: \u201cWhen I first joined the show, all of these people from my past came out of the woodwork and were DMing me, saying, \u2018Well, we\u2019re so excited for you. When is someone going to do something for Sisko? When is someone going to do an homage to DS9.’\u201d<\/p>\n
