The following pictures were all taken in the garden over a number of years, but I sorted them by month, from January to November.<\/p>\n<p>Foxes (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_fox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vulpes vulpes<\/a>) are among the first visitors to our garden each year. They have become very common in British cities. There are about 400,000 foxes in the U.K., and roughly one third are city-dwellers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-01-Fox_Vulpes-vulpes.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-01-Fox_Vulpes-vulpes.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"734\" height=\"490\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Magpies (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurasian_magpie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pica pica<\/a>) come in droves to our garden. They are fascinating to watch but tend to frighten off the songbirds and steal their food:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-02-CommonMagpies_Pica-pica.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-02-CommonMagpies_Pica-pica.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"1170\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Occasionally we see sparrowhawks (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurasian_sparrowhawk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Accipiter nisus<\/a>) plucking pigeons apart until what is left is small enough to fly away with. The magpies resent the sparrowhawks invading their territory, and gang up against them:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-03-Sparrowhawk_Accipiter-nisus.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-03-Sparrowhawk_Accipiter-nisus.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"522\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carrion crows (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carrion_crow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Corvus corone<\/a>) usually come in pairs; this one was an exception. The way it walked, paused, looked around, nodded its head, inspecting everything \u2013 it all suggested confidence and cleverness:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-04-CarrionCrow_Corvus-corone.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-04-CarrionCrow_Corvus-corone.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"856\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We do not often see Great Spotted Woodpeckers (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_spotted_woodpecker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dendrocopos major<\/a>), but regularly hear them pecking away when walking in the woodland behind the garden:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-05-GreatSpottedWoodpecker_Dendrocopos-major.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-05-GreatSpottedWoodpecker_Dendrocopos-major.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"854\" height=\"569\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mammals we see the most are our American friends, the Grey Squirrels (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_grey_squirrels_in_Europe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sciurus carolinensis<\/a>). They tend to chase ach other away, but these two were friendly, maybe young siblings:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-06-GreySquirrels_Sciurus-carolinensis_1.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-06-GreySquirrels_Sciurus-carolinensis_1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are always surprised to see amphibians because there is not much open water in our neighbourhood. This summer visitor is a Common Frog (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_frog\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rana temporaria<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-07-CommonFrog_Rana-temporaria.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-07-CommonFrog_Rana-temporaria.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wood mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wood_mouse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apodemus sylvaticus<\/a>) are almost as acrobatic as the squirrels, and we see them climbing up the stems of plants and jumping onto the birdfeeders:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-08-WoodMouse_Apodemus-sylvaticus.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-08-WoodMouse_Apodemus-sylvaticus.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t see hedgehogs (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_hedgehog\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Erinaceus europaeus<\/a>) often enough \u2013 we would like them to eat more of the slugs that invade our house from the garden:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-09-EuropeanHedgehog_Erinaceus-europaeus.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588227\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-09-EuropeanHedgehog_Erinaceus-europaeus.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the more common behaviour of the Grey Squirrels (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_grey_squirrels_in_Europe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sciurus carolinensis<\/a>): entering supposedly squirrel-proof birdfeeders and being nasty to each other:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-10-GreySquirrels_SciurusCarolinensis_2.jpeg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-10-GreySquirrels_SciurusCarolinensis_2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We often see pheasants (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_pheasant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phasianus colchicus<\/a>) around the golf course one kilometer away, but last November was the first time one came to see us:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-588230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/UrbanVertebrates-11-CommonPheasant_Phasianus-colchicus.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"863\" height=\"575\"
