Falling launch costs, fueled largely by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starlink-6-92-b1067-ksc-jrti\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starlink-6-92-b1067-ksc-jrti\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starlink-6-92-b1067-ksc-jrti\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reusable rockets<\/a>, have transformed access to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO), turning it into a fast-evolving marketplace where companies compete and innovate at rapid speed.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d6ff4076-6bf7-441b-a2ed-762d6caa29af-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">That shift carries far-reaching implications for life on Earth, which now depends heavily on space-based assets, from climate monitoring and global communications to internet connectivity and navigation, experts said last month during a session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"95001f56-8e2c-491b-baa9-ab5c40d7716b\">&#8220;The way I like to think about space is not as an industry, but really as an eighth continent,&#8221; said Dylan Taylor, CEO of Voyager Technologies, speaking to attendees on Jan. 22.<\/p>\n<p>At the forefront of this transformation is the geopolitical competition between the United States and China centered on a return to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>, a milestone poised to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/the-race-back-to-the-moon-what-if-china-lands-its-astronauts-first\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/the-race-back-to-the-moon-what-if-china-lands-its-astronauts-first\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/the-race-back-to-the-moon-what-if-china-lands-its-astronauts-first\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">define the norms of space activity for decades<\/a> ahead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The West absolutely is in a race with China to get back to the moon right now,&#8221; said John Gedmark, CEO of San Francisco-based satellite company Astranis.<\/p>\n<p>China has laid out an ambitious lunar plan to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-moon-landing-before-2030\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-moon-landing-before-2030\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-moon-landing-before-2030\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">land astronauts on the moon<\/a> before 2030, targeting the south pole, which contains water ice and other resources critical for long-term lunar exploration and settlement. NASA&#8217;s Artemis 3 mission currently aims to land astronauts near the lunar south pole by 2028, following the Artemis 2 crewed lunar flyby that&#8217;s targeted to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-delays-artemis-2-moon-launch-to-march-after-encountering-issues-during-fueling-test\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-delays-artemis-2-moon-launch-to-march-after-encountering-issues-during-fueling-test\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-delays-artemis-2-moon-launch-to-march-after-encountering-issues-during-fueling-test\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch in early March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s plans for its well-funded space program also include expanding the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/tiangong-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/tiangong-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/tiangong-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiangong space station<\/a> in LEO and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-tianwen-2-mars-sample-return-mission-2028\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-tianwen-2-mars-sample-return-mission-2028\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-tianwen-2-mars-sample-return-mission-2028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accelerating Mars exploration<\/a>. Chinese officials say the nation could return Mars samples to Earth as early as 2031 \u2014 potentially years ahead of U.S. efforts to retrieve samples collected by NASA&#8217;s Perseverance rover in the Red Planet&#8217;s Jezero Crater.<\/p>\n<p id=\"19b5ff37-f21c-4327-9555-aca7ab534e62\">Some experts argue that China&#8217;s steady execution has already given it an edge, while Western progress has been less consistent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been sort of all over the place,&#8221; said Gedmark.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Still, he argued that the outcome remains uncertain, pointing to strong partnerships between the United States and Europe as well as key structural advantages, chief among them a powerful commercial space sector. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a very real open question today as to what&#8217;s going to happen,&#8221; Gedmark said.<\/p>\n<p>Another major Western advantage, he added, is NASA&#8217;s current leadership. He praised newly appointed Administrator <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/us-senate-confirms-jared-isaacman-as-new-nasa-administrator\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/us-senate-confirms-jared-isaacman-as-new-nasa-administrator\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/us-senate-confirms-jared-isaacman-as-new-nasa-administrator\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jared Isaacman<\/a> as &#8220;the best candidate we&#8217;ve ever had for the position.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;re gonna see things move very quickly in a way that I think will put the United States in a very good position,&#8221; Gedmark said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond missions to the moon and Mars, Taylor said the next major leap in space will come from computing and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/china-joins-race-to-develop-space-based-data-centers-with-5-year-plan\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/china-joins-race-to-develop-space-based-data-centers-with-5-year-plan\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/china-joins-race-to-develop-space-based-data-centers-with-5-year-plan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data processing in orbit<\/a>.
