In the years since SpaceX <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/spacex-launches-60-satellites-for-elon-musk-s-starlink-1835007975\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched its first batch of Starlinks<\/a> back in 2019, numerous competitors have entered the market, including two you\u2019ve almost definitely heard about lately: <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/amazon-starlink-project-kuiper-satellite-internet-space-1850224177\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Leo<\/a> and Blue Origin\u2019s newly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/news\/blue-origin-introduces-terawave-space-based-network-for-global-connectivity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> TeraWave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/spacex-will-move-thousands-of-starlinks-closer-to-earth-in-2026-heres-why-2000704872\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a>, Amazon Leo, and TeraWave are far from the only players in this rapidly growing industry, but they stand out because of their massive financial backings and the ambitious strategic visions of their respective billionaire owners. <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/spacex-wont-go-public-until-the-planets-literally-align-sources-say-2000715151\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/elon-musk-says-i-came-to-my-senses-about-going-to-epstein-island-2000718185\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a> oversees Starlink, while <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/washington-post-lays-off-its-amazon-beat-reporter-as-bezos-brings-the-hammer-down-2000718027\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bezos<\/a>\u2014through <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/amazon-laying-off-16000-as-it-increases-ownership-and-removes-bureaucracy-2000715027\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/bezoss-next-rocket-launch-might-be-the-most-crucial-yet-for-blue-origin-2000713329\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a>\u2014is developing Amazon Leo and TeraWave.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these brands has taken a unique approach to building the next generation of satellite internet technology. Understanding the differences between them is key to grasping how the future of global connectivity may unfold. So, without further ado, let\u2019s dive in.<\/p>\n<p> Vastly different scales of deployment <\/p>\n<p>The first thing to understand is that these networks came on the scene at different times, and their parent companies have chosen different deployment strategies. As a result, they are in various stages of development.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink is by far the most mature of the three. SpaceX was first to market with its satellite project, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/spacex-opening-seattle-plant-to-build-4000-broadband-satellites\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announcing<\/a> it in 2015. Since the start of deployment in 2019, the company has rapidly built up the Starlink megaconstellation through hundreds of launches aboard its <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/musk-believed-a-sniper-took-out-a-falcon-9-rocket-in-2016-report-claims-2000598316\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9 rocket<\/a>, with 9,555 Starlinks currently <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/stats\/active.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">active<\/a> and providing broadband internet to millions worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/04\/05\/jeff-bezos-amazon-internet-satellites-4-billion-new-customers.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled<\/a> plans to develop a competitor\u2014called Project Kuiper at the time\u2014about one month before SpaceX launched its first batch of operational Starlinks, \u201cbut was much slower to really ramp up and start production,\u201d Kevin Bell, senior vice president of the Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) at The Aerospace Corporation, told Gizmodo. \u201cSome of that was satellite driven, some of that was rocket driven,\u201d Bell explained.<\/p>\n<p>While SpaceX\u2019s approach to Starlink development prioritized rapid iteration and deployment, Amazon took its time finalizing the design of its satellites and conducted more extensive prototype testing. Because Amazon does not have its own rockets to support satellite deployment, it partners with launch providers\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/amazon-buys-10-more-falcon-9-launches\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including<\/a> SpaceX\u2014to build its constellation.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/amazon-finally-enters-the-satellite-internet-race-taking-on-spacexs-starlink-2000595685\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched its first operational batch<\/a> of satellites aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket in April 2025. The next launch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/innovation-at-amazon\/project-kuiper-satellite-rocket-launch-progress-updates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set<\/a> for February 12, will bring the constellation (now called Amazon Leo) up to 212 satellites. Because it is still in the early days of scaling, the service has not yet launched commercially.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s TeraWave, the newcomer. Blue Origin announced the project on January 21, setting a goal to begin deployment by the first quarter of 2027. The company will presumably use its <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/bezoss-big-rocket-has-proved-itself-heres-whats-next-for-new-glenn-2000686257\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn rocket<\/a> to launch its satellites, but that has not yet been confirmed. According to the announcement, the TeraWave constellation will ultimately scale to 5,408 satellites situated in low-Earth orbit (where Starlink and Amazon Leo reside) and\u00a0in medium-Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s larger than Amazon Leo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/FCC-20-102A1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planned<\/a> deployment of 3,236 satellites, but if Musk gets his way, Starlink will eclipse both of Bezos\u2019s constellations. The Federal Communications Commission recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/sb-accepts-filing-spacexs-application-orbital-data-centers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved<\/a> a SpaceX application to <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/elon-musk-is-convinced-he-can-turn-low-earth-orbit-into-a-gigantic-data-center-2000716711\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch up to a million more Starlinks<\/a> for the purpose of building an orbital data center.<\/p>\n<p> Serving unique markets <\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking, the satellite internet industry serves two types of customers: enterprise and individual users. But according to Bell, these markets can be further divided into five core segments, namely direct to device, direct to consumer, high bandwidth (for business-scale users), backhaul (providing connectivity to underserved areas), and sovereign government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Starlink is really kind of spread across all of them, Amazon and TeraWave have chosen\u2014at least initially\u2014to position themselves towards the higher end,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink indeed serves a diverse array of users, from individuals to the American government. Its primary customer base, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/updates\/network-update?srsltid=AfmBOooYUYN_UNbHwT66jOx-U5Ar4TmfAlfTkW3n03L21TH27fxbF5rf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consists<\/a> of people living in rural and remote areas who lack access to reliable, high-speed internet. Amazon Leo ultimately plans to target that market, but its initial phase of deployment will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/amazon-leo\/amazon-leo-satellite-internet-ultra-pro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serve<\/a> select enterprise, government, and telecommunications customers.<\/p>\n<p>TeraWave is unique in that it is not at all geared toward individual customers. This network will serve \u201ctens of thousands\u201d of enterprise, data center, and government users, according to Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big differences there is that, typically, an enterprise would negotiate a service level agreement\u2014so there is a requirement that the company be able to provide a certain level of speed, a certain level of capacity,\u201d Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association, told Gizmodo.<\/p>\n<p>To meet that demand, Blue Origin will design TeraWave to deliver data speeds of up to 6 terabits per second anywhere on Earth. By comparison, Starlink and Amazon Leo offer speeds ranging from hundreds of megabits to around 1 gigabit per second, which is suitable for individuals and some enterprise customers but not tailored toward high-capacity backhaul or large-scale enterprise operations.<\/p>\n<p>As these networks grow, the satellite internet industry is undergoing a rapid transformation. Competition between them\u2014and their many other competitors\u2014will continue to drive innovation, bringing faster speeds, higher capacity, and broader coverage to users around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach generation of satellite that is being launched has greater speed and capacity than the prior generation,\u201d Stroup said. \u201cWe\u2019re just iterating much more quickly than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The satellite internet race is ramping up.
