{"id":275434,"date":"2026-02-09T16:41:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/275434\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T16:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T16:41:16","slug":"market-pushes-street-to-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/275434\/","title":{"rendered":"Market pushes street to capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dunedin&#8217;s main shopping street was almost at bursting point.<\/p>\n<p>There were so many people at the George Street Market on Saturday that it was hard to move through the crowds while stopping to do a spot of shopping, having a bite to eat or pausing to watch entertainers.<\/p>\n<p>About 250 stalls \u2014 featuring crafts, jewellery, apparel, cosmetics, decor and art \u2014 lined George St from the Octagon to Frederick St.<\/p>\n<p>Two cruise ships,\u00a0Celebrity Edge\u00a0and\u00a0Viking Orion, deposited about 3000 passengers into Dunedin \u2014 swelling the crowds.<\/p>\n<p>It was sheepskin slipper-maker and seller Robyn Hawkesby\u2019s second year at the market.<\/p>\n<p>While the overseas visitors were not the best customers \u2014 being sceptical the brightly-coloured slippers were authentic \u2014 she made many sales to University of Otago students, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her slipper-making journey began about 50 years ago when she was a student and her passion for it had never wavered, she said.<\/p>\n<p>While it was more of a hobby to keep busy in the evenings, doing the odd market, when she was up for it, suited her \u2018\u2018just fine\u2019\u2019, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Enterprise Dunedin destination manager Teresa Fogarty said the market was fast becoming one of the city\u2019s standout events and had national and international appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The weather played ball and stallholders were delighted by the day, reporting the market was well organised, while musical performances on the acoustic and live stages showcased local talent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dunedin&#8217;s main shopping street was almost at bursting point.
