The ELT will be the world&#8217;s largest telescope, with a primary mirror that measures 128 feet (39 meters) across.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Astronomy depends as much on location as it does on technology. To observe the faintest and most distant objects in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the universe<\/a>, telescopes need dark, dry and stable skies, conditions that are increasingly rare on Earth. Mountains in the Chilean Atacama Desert, like Cerro Armazones, offer an almost perfect natural laboratory. Situated at high altitude, far from cities, and in one of the driest places on the planet, they provide exceptionally clear nights with minimal atmospheric disturbance.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e-1\">For more than six decades, this environment has made Chile the global center of ground-based astronomy. The<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> European Southern Observatory<\/a> (ESO) operates all of its observatories here, including the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT) at Cerro Paranal and, soon, the ELT.
