It was announced this past weekend that Alexandre Aja\u00a0(High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) will return to aquatic horror to direct Under Paris 2 <\/a>for Netflix, which left many fans wondering if Aja is still attached to direct a sequel to his 2019 alligator movie Crawl.<\/p>\n

Last we heard, Alexandre Aja would be returning to direct Crawl 2, with the setting being moved from swampy Florida to a partially-submerged New York City. Chatting with The Wrap<\/a> this month, producer Sam Raimi provides a status update on the stalled project.<\/p>\n

Raimi explains to the outlet, \u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to get a go from the studio, and they changed hands, Paramount Pictures did, and now the new group that\u2019s come in I\u2019ve worked with before, the ladies and gentlemen that are great at development, and they\u2019re interested in Crawl 2. That\u2019s all I could really say right now, is now I\u2019ve got a new hope to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit, I think, embarrassing to make an alligator in the basement picture,\u201d Raimi adds. \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s what their lofty ambitions were but I think there\u2019s a crowd that loves those kinds of films, if they\u2019re well-made and honestly trying to make this suspenseful and scary and get to know the characters, if they\u2019re really trying to do that, there\u2019s nothing to be embarrassed about. Yes, it\u2019s a B movie but it\u2019s a blast. I really like that kind of picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Released in 2019,\u00a0Alexandre Aja\u2018s\u00a0Crawl\u00a0put Kaya Scodelario up against a category 5 hurricane and a pack of hungry alligators, and the thrilling mix of action and suspense-horror proved to be a hit with audiences at the box office. On a $13 million production budget,\u00a0Crawl\u00a0scared up over $91 million worldwide, with sequel talks beginning almost immediately.<\/p>\n

Andrew Deutschman\u00a0and\u00a0Jason Pagan\u00a0(Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension) had been attached to write the screenplay for the Crawl sequel. Stay tuned for more.<\/p>\n
