Whangapar\u0101oa College principal Steve McCracken confirmed the \u201cstudent was taken to Starship [hospital] in an ambulance with mum next to them\u201d.<\/p>\n
Local resident Livy Gledhill heard multiple sounds of sirens and said the spot where it happened was a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n
Gledhill said she\u2019s waited for something to happen at the location, as it doesn\u2019t have a pedestrian crossing.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo many people have to run [across the road] no matter what especially the kids… it was scary over the holidays watching all the young ones while parents are at work.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou also have primary kids using that spot for crossing in the morning and afternoons. \u201c<\/p>\n
Gledhill\u2019s daughter had just started attending Whangapar\u0101oa College and said her \u201cheart goes out to all those affected in the community\u201d.<\/p>\n
She believed the area would benefit from traffic lights.<\/p>\n
Police confirmed they then received reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car on Onewa Rd at 8.26am.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn intermediate-aged child suffered moderate injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
St John sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne patient was assessed by the crew at the scene and transported to Starship Hospital by ambulance in a moderate condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was unclear which school the student attended, however St Mary\u2019s School principal Paul Coakley said he believed they were from Northcote College.<\/p>\n
Coakley said he saw \u201cmultiple fire, ambulance and police rush past\u201d.<\/p>\n
