{"id":276347,"date":"2026-02-10T05:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T05:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276347\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T05:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T05:16:12","slug":"elusive-tentacled-animals-that-avoid-sunlight-like-the-plague-spotted-off-coast-of-norway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276347\/","title":{"rendered":"Elusive tentacled animals that &#8220;avoid sunlight like the plague&#8221; spotted off coast of Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When deep-sea scientists from OceanX ventured into the waters off Norway, they came across a curious crimson\u00a0jellyfish\u00a0with tentacles like trailing shoelaces.<\/p>\n<p>The red helmet jelly (Periphylla periphylla) is commonly observed\u00a0[by our teams]\u00a0in blooms in Norway\u2019s fjords\u201d and is known to exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/bioluminescence-explained-why-glow-worms-glow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bioluminescence<\/a>,\u201d says a spokesperson from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanx.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OceanX<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During observations, it was found across multiple depths throughout Masfjorden and Sognefjorden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution<\/a> (WHOI), this flaming red creature loves the deep, dark sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve never seen a helmet jellyfish in real life, you\u2019re in good company: it\u2019s one of the few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/jellyfish-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jellyfish<\/a> (to be accurate, cnidaria) that spends most of its life in the ocean twilight zone,\u201d WHOI says on its\u00a0website. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to their photo-sensitive red pigment, helmet jellies avoid sunlight like the plague, preferring the frigid depths to the sun\u2019s damaging rays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Red helmet jelly filmed during the OceanX Norway mission.
