{"id":276792,"date":"2026-02-10T11:19:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T11:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276792\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T11:19:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T11:19:20","slug":"dont-miss-the-half-lit-moon-take-to-the-winter-sky-feb-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276792\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t miss the half-lit moon take to the winter sky Feb. 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"069fd0ee-83d4-4ba3-87ad-834c06a5f672\">Turn your eyes to the southeast sky late on Feb. 9, into the early hours of Feb. 10 to see the last quarter moon rise among the stars of the constellation Libra, as vast lunar craters and sweeping mountain ranges are thrown into relief on its ancient surface.<\/p>\n<p>February&#8217;s third quarter <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon phase<\/a> will occur at 10:48 a.m. EST (1548 GMT) \u2014 during the daylight hours for stargazers in North America \u2014 when the left side of the lunar disk will appear bathed in direct sunlight, while the right is hidden under a veil of impenetrable shadow.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"069fd0ee-83d4-4ba3-87ad-834c06a5f672-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Because the exact phase occurs during the day, skywatchers in the U.S. will get their opportunity to see the half-lit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> when it rises shortly after midnight on Feb. 10, with the bright <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22049-spica.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22049-spica.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22049-spica.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spica<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22842-arcturus.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22842-arcturus.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22842-arcturus.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arcturus<\/a> glistening above in the winter sky.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"e3ca8952-17c5-4da9-9990-3605f1d2cf3c\">The third quarter moon is the perfect time to grab your telescope and explore the rims and shadow-lined basins of ancient craters that lie close to the line separating night from day on the lunar disk, known as the terminator.
