{"id":276838,"date":"2026-02-10T11:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T11:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276838\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T11:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T11:56:09","slug":"rare-loggerhead-turtle-washed-up-in-suffolk-during-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/276838\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare loggerhead turtle washed up in Suffolk during storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Globally, the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is now listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn-mtsg.org\/updates\/2015-loggerhead-redlist-assessments\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, external<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The creatures are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/sea-turtle\/loggerhead-turtle\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the most common turtle in the Mediterranean, external<\/a>, nesting on beaches from Greece and Turkey to Israel and Libya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A BDMLR spokesperson said while loggerheads were rare in UK waters and did not belong here, the organisation was seeing more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">So far this year, it has been called out to rescues in the Channel Islands, Wales, Scotland, Dorset and Kent, &#8220;but I think we&#8217;ve only ever had one or two in Suffolk&#8221;, they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Sea temperatures are rising, and they get washed up here in storms, usually suffering from cold shock or being &#8216;cold-stunned&#8217;, so they can&#8217;t move, and some people think they are dead,&#8221; they continued. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The people who found this loggerhead did exactly the right thing &#8211; some people try to put them back in the water, but that is the worst thing for them &#8211; we&#8217;d encourage anyone who finds one to call us, and we can get it to the experts.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Globally, the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is now listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, external.
