Earth&#8217;s moon is 400 times smaller than <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>, which happens to be, on average, 400 times farther from our planet than its natural satellite \u2014 a wondrous cosmic coincidence that causes both celestial objects to appear the same size in our sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b6ed0fab-76ee-4717-b9a1-d9d45678e9bf-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">This allows us to see breathtaking <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar eclipses<\/a> when the lunar disk passes directly in front of the sun during its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new moon<\/a> phase, blocking its light. Skywatchers in the southern extreme of South America, southeastern Africa and in parts of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean will also bear witness to a lesser\u2014 yet still breathtaking \u2014 partial solar eclipse, during which the lunar disk will be seen to take a &#8220;bite&#8221; out of the sun.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-79ddaf08-0d25-4fd9-9995-ddd80506e143\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s best solar eclipse viewing glasses deals<\/p>\n<p id=\"df76f31b-b735-44ed-b8db-06be4eab0faf\">Remember, it&#8217;s never safe to stare at the sun with the naked eye, even for a second, as doing so risks immediate and permanent damage to your eyes.
