\u201cI\u2019m not going to recognise a state that\u2019s currently weaponising hostages, holding people for years on end in absolutely inhumane conditions. I mean, who would recognise that?\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
Leaving the debating chamber on Wednesday afternoon, Peters told reporters Seymour had \u201cno authority\u201d to make such a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not the Government\u2019s position. The Government\u2019s position is articulated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. That\u2019s the agreed situation, and for the second time, someone is talking out of his field.<\/p>\n
\u201cA statement was made by someone who\u2019s got no authority to make it, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re putting the record straight now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked if he had experienced difficulty with Seymour on the issue of recognition, the NZ First leader laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think you should speak to others about that, but I\u2019m making sure that you\u2019re not misled, and next time anybody does that, from wherever it might come, why don\u2019t you ask the minister in charge? Namely, me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked if he would speak to Seymour about his concerns, Peters said: \u201cLook, we\u2019re not dealing with the loco juventus, do you know what that means in Latin?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d a reporter replied.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay. Go very carefully and find out,\u201d Peters said.<\/p>\n
The minister\u2019s office has since clarified his use of loco juventus referred to the \u201cgeneral inexperience of youth\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was asked … what Act\u2019s position is, and I think that\u2019s pretty clear … That\u2019s not exclusive from the fact that the Government is going to come to a position.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s under active consideration. As I said at the time, the Foreign Minister is going to make this announcement at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seymour said it was \u201cfair enough\u201d for Peters to have his opinion.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll three of us, at different times, speak on behalf of the Government. Other times people say, \u2018Well, what do you think?\u2019 and we speak on behalf of our parties.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you look at most of the things that he\u2019s said in recent times, for example, at his party conference, they were things that are New Zealand First\u2019s position, but not the Government.<\/p>\n
\u201cSimilarly, sometimes I say things, I say that\u2019s what Act thinks, but nonetheless, as I also said in the same interview, the Government position is under active consideration [and] will be announced by, I think my exact words were, right minister at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n
