At most wet markets and street stalls, the familiar green and blue <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3316124\/wechat-and-alipay-are-chinas-comparative-advantage-stablecoin-race-top-economist?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WeChat Pay and Alipay QR<\/a> codes continued to dominate.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The slow uptake underscores that China still has a long way to go to realise its ambitions. Despite government and public sector incentives, such as issuing consumption coupons and tax rebates through the system, users have shown little motivation to embrace the digital currency.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chloe Cui, an employee at a state-owned bank, is paid a portion of her salary in digital yuan \u2013 another initiative to expand domestic use. But every month, she transfers the money straight to her regular bank account. \u201cI\u2019ve never used [it] for payments. I only use it when receiving money,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling Communist Party had pledged to \u201csteadily develop the digital yuan\u201d in its proposal for the new <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3326401\/why-chinas-five-year-plan-matters-and-how-it-could-steer-economy-turbulent-times?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">five-year plan<\/a>, the country\u2019s top socio-economic development blueprint. The new framework, which took effect on January 1, was part of that drive.
