Mark Carney<\/a> said he had held a \u201cpositive\u201d conversation with Donald Trump<\/a> after the US leader threatened to block a new key bridge between their two countries, reminding the president that Canada<\/a> paid for the structure \u2013 and that the US shares ownership.<\/p>\n

Late on Monday, Trump posted a lengthy message on social media, falsely claiming that the $4.6bn Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan<\/a>, had \u201cvirtually no US content\u201d. The bridge is due to open in early 2026.<\/p>\n

In his post, Trump had also claimed that Canada owns both ends of the bridge and made a bizarre assertion that increased trade between Canada and China<\/a> would include a ban on Canadians playing ice hockey.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States<\/a>, to PERMIT them to just \u2018take advantage of America!\u2019 What does the United States of America get \u2013 Absolutely NOTHING!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday ahead of a flashpoint ice hockey game between the two countries at the Olympics<\/a>, Carney downplayed Trump\u2019s comments, telling reporters in French the \u201csituation will be resolved\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI explained that Canada paid for the construction of the bridge \u2026 that the ownership is shared between the state of Michigan<\/a> and the government of Canada, and that in the construction of the bridge, obviously there\u2019s Canadian steel and Canadian workers, but also US steel, US workers that were involved,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a great example of cooperation between our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for \u201cstupidly\u201d approving the bridge project. But the former Conservative MP Jeff Watson pointed out \u201cconstruction began in earnest in your first term as President \u2026 Back then you called for expeditious construction<\/a>\u201d of the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just insane, when I read that post I can\u2019t believe what I\u2019m reading, but it\u2019s par for the course,\u201d the Windsor mayor, Drew Dilkens, told CBC News.<\/p>\n

Since winning a second term, Trump has focused much of his attention and outrage on Canada<\/a>, replaying many of his longstanding grievances in meandering social media posts, including frustration with the dairy industry and China.<\/p>\n

Trump has made a number of threats against Canada in his second term and drastically hiked tariffs. After the president imposed tariffs on goods such as steel, aluminum and automobiles, Canada\u2019s most populous province pulled US spirits and wines from the shelves<\/a> of its government-run liquor stores.<\/p>\n

\u201cOntario won\u2019t even put US spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Ontario\u2019s populist premier, Doug Ford, said he would \u201cdouble down [on the US liquor ban] if we have to\u201d, adding: \u201cYou want to fix it? Get rid of the tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s latest tirade reflects his apparently growing concern over Carney\u2019s plans to step up trade with China<\/a> \u2013 a move the president initially praised.<\/p>\n

Last month, he said he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it follows through on a trade deal with China.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina \u2026 will eat Canada alive,\u201d Trump wrote on Monday, adding: \u201cThe first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey<\/a> being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadians poked fun at Trump\u2019s bizarre claim that China would force Canada to give up both its national pastime and the professional hockey\u2019s most coveted trophy as part of a trade deal with Beijing.<\/p>\n

\u201cif trump knew puck he\u2019d know canada hasn\u2019t had to worry about the stanley cup for a couple decades now,\u201d wrote one user on X<\/a>, a nod to Canada\u2019s failure to win the top prize since 1993.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether this proves real or simply threatened to keep uncertainty high \u2013 blocking or barricading bridges is a self-defeating move,\u201d Candace Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough decades of collaboration, Canada and the United States build things together, create jobs together and compete globally together.\u201d<\/p>\n
