{"id":277698,"date":"2026-02-10T23:40:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T23:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/277698\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T23:40:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T23:40:09","slug":"mark-carney-reminds-trump-that-canada-paid-for-key-border-bridge-us-president-says-he-wont-open-donald-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/277698\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Carney reminds Trump that Canada paid for key border bridge US president says he won\u2019t open | Donald Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/mark-carney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> said he had held a \u201cpositive\u201d conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> after the US leader threatened to block a new key bridge between their two countries, reminding the president that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> paid for the structure \u2013 and that the US shares ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Late on Monday, Trump posted a lengthy message on social media, falsely claiming that the $4.6bn Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/michigan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan<\/a>, had \u201cvirtually no US content\u201d. The bridge is due to open in early 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his post, Trump had also claimed that Canada owns both ends of the bridge and made a bizarre assertion that increased trade between Canada and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a> would include a ban on Canadians playing ice hockey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a>, to PERMIT them to just \u2018take advantage of America!\u2019 What does the United States of America get \u2013 Absolutely NOTHING!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking to reporters on Tuesday ahead of a flashpoint ice hockey game between the two countries at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/winter-olympics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympics<\/a>, Carney downplayed Trump\u2019s comments, telling reporters in French the \u201csituation will be resolved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI explained that Canada paid for the construction of the bridge \u2026 that the ownership is shared between the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/michigan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan<\/a> and the government of Canada, and that in the construction of the bridge, obviously there\u2019s Canadian steel and Canadian workers, but also US steel, US workers that were involved,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a great example of cooperation between our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for \u201cstupidly\u201d approving the bridge project. But the former Conservative MP Jeff Watson pointed out \u201cconstruction began in earnest in your first term as President \u2026 Back then you called for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/joint-statement-president-trump-and-prime-minister-justin-pj-trudeau-canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expeditious construction<\/a>\u201d of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s just insane, when I read that post I can\u2019t believe what I\u2019m reading, but it\u2019s par for the course,\u201d the Windsor mayor, Drew Dilkens, told CBC News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since winning a second term, Trump has focused much of his attention and outrage on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, replaying many of his longstanding grievances in meandering social media posts, including frustration with the dairy industry and China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump has made a number of threats against Canada in his second term and drastically hiked tariffs. After the president imposed tariffs on goods such as steel, aluminum and automobiles, Canada\u2019s most populous province <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/05\/jack-daniels-canada-trump-tariffs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled US spirits and wines from the shelves<\/a> of its government-run liquor stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOntario won\u2019t even put US spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Tuesday, Ontario\u2019s populist premier, Doug Ford, said he would \u201cdouble down [on the US liquor ban] if we have to\u201d, adding: \u201cYou want to fix it?
