That’s an enormous sum by any standard, and for most films it would represent a major success. But for an Avatar sequel, it may still fall short of breaking even, which raises questions about whether James Cameron will ultimately get to complete the next two installments in the franchise.

Will Avatar: Fire and Ash Turn a Profit?

According to a recent report from Variety, Disney has spent roughly $500 million to produce and promote Avatar: Fire and Ash. Once the theatrical exhibitors’ share of the box office is factored in, the film could end up only marginally profitable. Additional revenue will come from Disney+ and related ventures such as theme parks, but a film of this scale arguably shouldn’t need such massive grosses to justify its existence. In a 2022 interview with GQ, Cameron called the Avatar franchise “the worst business case in movie history,” noting that each installment needs to earn roughly $1.5 billion just to break even.

While Fire and Ash has performed impressively in theaters, it hasn’t quite reached that benchmark, and the franchise’s declining box-office totals are difficult to ignore. The original Avatar earned $2.9 billion globally, while The Way of Water brought in $2.3 billion. The obvious solution would be to reduce production costs, but whether that’s realistically possible for a Cameron production remains unclear.

“It’s one thing to say, ‘This was profitable, not massively so, but the property benefits us in other ways, especially theme parks,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school. “It’s another to say, ‘We’re going to invest another $500 million twice,’ if you’re on this downward trajectory. I imagine Disney is doing a lot to put the brakes on budgets — and that may eventually lead to a breaking point. James Cameron makes expensive films.“

Could Fire and Ash be the Last Avatar Movie?

Although Cameron certainly has plans for Avatar 4 and 5, and has even filmed a portion of them, he said he wouldn’t leave fans hanging if the franchise ends with Fire and Ash. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” said Cameron last month. “But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?“

I’ve learned never to bet against James Cameron, so I feel confident we will see another Avatar movie.
