Treatment requires repeated doses over time, a tall order for people who might have to travel many miles to reach a clinic, and in recent years, drug-resistant strains of the parasite have exploded. To help stem the tide, Dr. Ghyslain Mombo-Ngoma, head of clinical operations at the Centre de Recherches M\u00e9dicales de Lambar\u00e9n\u00e9 (CERMEL) in Gabon, and his colleagues came up with a daring new plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">This year, Mombo-Ngoma led a trial of a new single-dose treatment containing four different drugs, called SPAP, that each attack the parasite from a different angle. The team reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astmh.org\/CMSPages\/GetFile.aspx?guid=27c19624-fd53-4261-a81b-988217f7e2f0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November<\/a> that it is just as effective as prior treatments immediately, opening the door to reining in malaria&#8217;s evolution and saving lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">With plans for the treatment to be rolled out this year, Mombo-Ngoma expects it will act as a stop-gap until exciting new malaria therapies arrive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Malaria kills more than half a million people a year, mostly children.
