As she gears up for her return to the big screen, Margot Robbie is opening up about the unsolicited advice she received early in her career from a fellow actor.

Sitting down with pop musician Charli XCX for Complex’s latest “GOAT Talk” video interview, Robbie didn’t miss a beat when she was asked about the worst gift she’d ever received.

“Very, very early in my career, an actor I worked with ― a male actor ― gave me a book called ‘Why French Women Don’t Get Fat,’ and it was essentially a book telling you to eat less. I was like, ‘Whoa ― fuck you, dude!’”

She went on to note, “He essentially gave me a book to tell me I should lose weight. I was like, ‘Wow.’”

Robbie was referring to “French Women Don’t Get Fat: The Secret of Eating for Pleasure” by Mireille Guiliano. According to a synopsis on Guiliano’s official website, the 2004 book “reveals the ingredients for a lifetime of weight control,” and “shows how virtually anyone can learn to eat, drink, and move like a French woman.”

Robbie, however, appeared to have the last laugh. After Charli XCX pressed the “Barbie” star for details on which actor had given her the book, she shrugged.

Watch Margot Robbie’s Complex chat with Charli XCX below. Her remarks on the worst gift she’s ever received start around the 11:56 mark.

“I have no idea where he would even be now,” she said. “This is really back in the day.”

Robbie stars alongside Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights,” in theaters Friday. Hot off the success of her era-defining 2024 album, “Brat,” Charli XCX provides the new film’s soundtrack.

“Wuthering Heights” has been adapted for the big screen numerous times, most notably in 1939 with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier, and in 1992, with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. Still, Robbie hopes audiences will be surprised by the new version, which she described to British Vogue as “a big epic romance” in the vein of “The English Patient” and “Titanic.”

As for Elordi, it sounds as if he’s a more thoughtful gift-giver than the unnamed actor of Robbie’s past. Speaking to USA Today this week, Robbie said her co-star tried to stay in character by filling her dressing room with roses on Valentine’s Day as they were filming, and later surprised her with a curated box of snacks from their native Australia.

“His dad brought it over from Australia, and the nice thing was that [he] remembered all of my favorite things that I said in passing,” she recalled. “I’m a very simple creature. Just give me some food.”
