I believe we can address this for the benefit of everyone &#8211; and especially growers\u201d &#8211; Blomfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The second is an envisioned \u201cBloomberg terminal\u201d for fruit selling r what Blomfield says will be an online trading market, fuelled by artificial intelligence (AI) data from his company\u2019s systems, which will \u201cmove the balance of power back to fruit producers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">He says it will provide fully-fleshed-out data (so to speak) for the $1.7 trillion fresh produce market for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs a New Zealander, I have seen how growers and producers seem to work the hardest and get paid the least. I believe we can address this for the benefit of everyone &#8211; and especially growers,\u201d Blomfield says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">Blomfield says revenue increased by 100% last year as his company grew its business in fruit-producing regions, including North America, Europe, and Latin America as his firm collected data on 17 billion apples and 37 billion cherries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">He won\u2019t say off what base the increase was achieved, but his company\u2019s outlook saw its original Series A target of $10m over-subscribed.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Hectre's packer dashboard.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/> Hectre&#8217;s packer dashboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cCustomers are really buying it. The operations manager at a large US fruit packer told us that Hectre sounded so good it must be \u2018bulls***\u2019. It uses third-party \u201chyperspectral imaging and sensing equipment\u201d as it focuses on its software and machine learning (a branch of AI) \u2013 but the hardware and software is bundled and sold as a single solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Golden visas\u2019 underpin Hector\u2019s raise<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">Punakaiki Fund partner Nadine Hill said her firm had seen a steady inflow of funds from high-net-worth individuals gaining residency to New Zealand under the Active Investor Plus (AIP) or \u201cgolden visa\u201d scheme introduced in April last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The AIP scheme lowered investment thresholds and removed an English-speaking requirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">AIP centres on two categories, one for those willing to put at least $5m into \u201cgrowth\u201d investments such as venture capital, the other for $10m in \u201cbalanced\u201d investments.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration NZ updates golden visa numbers<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immigration.govt.nz\/about-us\/news-centre\/investor-category\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.immigration.govt.nz\/about-us\/news-centre\/investor-category\/\">January 23, 2026 update<\/a>, Immigration New Zealand said there have now been 532 applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">So far, 392 have been approved in principle (324 in \u201cgrowth\u201d and 68 in \u201cbalanced\u201d), representing \u201ca potential total minimum investment of $3.16 billion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">As of January 19, 2026, 159 applications have been granted resident visas, 34 in the balanced category and 125 in the growth category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The total committed investment from these applications amounts to $926.2m into New Zealand\u2019s economy, Immigration New Zealand says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The majority of the investments to date have been into Invest New Zealand approved managed funds, and bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">The US (201 applications) has been easily the biggest source of applicants, followed by China (86), Germany (86), Hong Kong (69) and Singapore and Taiwan (both 26).<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">There are signs the golden visas have helped boost the local venture capital scene after its post-Covid lull.<\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">Last year saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/angel-investors-spread-bets-wider-as-deal-activity-jumps-33-in-2025\/premium\/CKTCVCOYPZHMXCQY7QCF4J5QQ4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/angel-investors-spread-bets-wider-as-deal-activity-jumps-33-in-2025\/premium\/CKTCVCOYPZHMXCQY7QCF4J5QQ4\/\">38.7% increase in angel investment<\/a> \u2013 usually high net worth individuals investing in early-stage companies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">Icehouse Ventures recently credited the AIP scheme as one of the factors behind its recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/icehouse-ventures-seed-fund-iv-hits-70m-three-factors-behind-the-record-raise\/premium\/TPCWAJHQFREVTA6CEDP3OXNWX4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/icehouse-ventures-seed-fund-iv-hits-70m-three-factors-behind-the-record-raise\/premium\/TPCWAJHQFREVTA6CEDP3OXNWX4\/\">record-settiing $70m raise for its Seed Fund IV<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"iSXYlpzztwWbxuk\" style=\"display:none\">Chris Keall is an Auckland-based member of the Herald\u2019s business team.
