The newly described species is one of the earliest known tetrapods \u2014 or four-limbed animals \u2014 to show evidence of having a plant-based diet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxalz00033j6q97zep8a9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The discovery, detailed in a study that was published Tuesday in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-025-02929-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution<\/a>, centers on a skull found in a fossilized tree stump along the cliffs of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. The species name, Tyrannoroter heberti, is a nod to the man who discovered the fossil, Brian Hebert, a local paleontology enthusiast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxalz00043j6qomgdmpt6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt translates to \u2018Hebert\u2019s tyrant digger,\u2019\u201d said co-lead study author Dr. Arjan Mann. The name combines the Greek words for \u201ctyrant\u201d and \u201cplough man,\u201d since its snout was likely used for digging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxalz00053j6q9njfa3yz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The finding reveals that the oldest four-limbed land animals likely started eating vegetation around the middle of the Carboniferous Period, pushing back the timeline for the emergence of plant-eating vertebrates. \u201cThat\u2019s pretty shortly after tetrapods transitioned fully to land,\u201d Mann said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        The body of an early plant eater<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/img-2376.jpg\" alt=\"Arjan Mann holds a 3D-printed replica of Tyrannoroter\u2019s skull at Chicago\u2019s Field Museum.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1726\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam000063j6qu567y3l8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Using 3D scanning and printing, the team was able to study the fossil in remarkable detail. \u201cIt\u2019s a way of digital preparation that allows us to visualize the skull and make 3D prints for our museum collections, for outreach, and to take around the world without risking the actual fossil,\u201d explained Mann, curator of early tetrapods at Chicago\u2019s Field Museum of Natural History.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam000073j6q3o1a0m1r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After studying the fossil and comparing it with skeletons of relatives, the researchers were able to determine that Tyrannoroter heberti was \u201ca little big, chunky, cute, football-sized, reptile-like thing,\u201d similar to a <a href=\"https:\/\/australian.museum\/learn\/animals\/reptiles\/shingleback-lizard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shingleback skink<\/a>, which is a type of lizard, Mann said. These choppers fit together like puzzle pieces, allowing the animal to grind up tough, fibrous plants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam000093j6qo4g697od@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis massive amount of surface area on its palate, covered in large, robust teeth, is probably a key adaptation to herbivory,\u201d explained Mann, referring to plant feeding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam0000a3j6q8otw66so@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To confirm its plant-based diet, the research team relied on CT scans and electron microscopes to identify wear facets \u2014 areas where the teeth grind together. \u201cOther animals with similar wear facets are herbivores during later time periods,\u201d Mann noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam0000b3j6qfbf4gcc8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new research shows plant-eating evolved earlier and in more animal groups than previously thought, said Michael Coates, professor of organismal biology and anatomy at the University of Chicago who was not involved in the study. The findings shed light on how early land ecosystems developed, according to Coates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000c3j6qr1erzu1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also noted that Tyrannoroter\u2019s rows of teeth were a leftover trait from its aquatic ancestors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000d3j6qej0l1apu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study authors hypothesized that this early land animal initially fed on insects but over generations evolved into an herbivore. Coates agreed, adding that feasting on vegetation shortened the Tyrannoroter \u201cfood chain by cutting out insects as the \u2018middlemen.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000e3j6q8ezgcqo8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This dietary shift would have required more than specialized teeth. To digest stalky plants, Tyrannoroter and other early herbivores likely developed bigger, barrel-shaped bodies to accommodate larger guts. These expanded digestive systems would have supported robust gut microbes \u2014 tiny organisms that help break down plant material.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/img-0269-20260205212138653.jpg\" alt=\"Arjan Mann holds the Tyrannoroter\u2019s heart-shaped skull.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2400\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000g3j6qznv7nl7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The broader significance of the find, Mann explained, is that it suggests four-limbed vertebrates rapidly evolved into herbivores after becoming full-time land dwellers, appearing sooner than scientists previously thought. \u201cModern terrestrial ecosystems have herbivore-dominated communities,\u201d he said. \u201cThis animal shows that it\u2019s almost as soon as animals were becoming terrestrialized, they were also experimenting with herbivory and potentially paving the way for the large-scale, widespread herbivory we see later.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000h3j6qx01zvtxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings also suggest that herbivory evolved independently in several different groups of early land vertebrates, not just in the ancestors of modern reptiles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000i3j6qqgia5lzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Climate change may also have shaped ancient ecosystems, Mann noted. As the climate shifted from wet, mangrove-like forests to more arid environments, many early herbivores struggled to adapt and eventually disappeared. With the disappearance of flora that these species needed to survive, the animals became a \u201cdead group walking,\u201d  Mann explained. This may have been what drove the Tyrannoroter\u2019s lineage to extinction, according to Mann.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000j3j6q5pxvw4bj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many mysteries remain about early plant-eating animals and their place in the family tree. \u201cI think that this study just scratches the surface and allows us that gateway to start studying tetrapods with this new perspective,\u201d Mann said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlicxam1000k3j6qi6rlwaep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And for aspiring paleontologists, Mann has a message. \u201cThe majority of questions left in early tetrapod evolution and vertebrate evolution are in front of us, not behind us,\u201d he said. \u201cNew fossils change stories all the time, and this is the case of a new fossil coming to light and changing our entire perspective on the evolution of life on land.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmliicq8r00023b6p831c49o7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
